Sam Bailey: "I Want Mary J Blige As An X Factor Judge"
EXCLUSIVE: X Factor 2013 winner judges the judging panel...
As the winner of this year’s X Factor, Sam Bailey has had to endure ten tortuous weeks of judging, so it’s only fair for her to turn the tables… and judge the judges!
Luckily for Gary Barlow, Nicole Scherzinger and Sharon Osborne, Sam only had wonderful things to say about the judging panel, calling Sharon, in particular: “The best mentor I could’ve ever wished for!”
“She was there from day one,” recalled Sam. “She might have been toing-and-froing from LA, but I don’t hold that against her at all because she was at the end of a phone.”
“I’m definitely going to stay in touch with her because we’ve really bonded and on an emotional level, not just from her being my mentor. We got on like house-on-fire.”
And while Sam didn’t have a chance to speak to Gary properly until the end of the competiton (“I never approached him before because of the conflict of interest with him having other contestants”), she called him “inspirational.”
“I think it’s his voice for me,” the Skyscraper singer explained. “He’s got an amazing singing voice. The fact that he’s such an amazing songwriter as well… so he’s very inspirational for me.”
During the competition Sam also had the chance to perform with Nicole Scherzinger, an experience she called “amazing”: “When I found out that I was singing with Nicole, it was one of those moments that I thought ‘oh my goodness!’”
“I know that she’s got a massive range so when I found out that I was singing the song that I was singing as well, I knew it was going to be huge.”
And while Sam didn’t mention X Factor veteran Louis Walsh, who, in the final, urged viewers to vote for Sam over his own act, Nicholas McDonald, she did say that she “can’t wait to meet” Simon Cowell.
“I’ve never met him so it’d be really nice to meet him and I’m so pleased that I’ve got this far,” said Sam. She also added that should “would love to see Simon” come back on the judging panel next year.
And, unsurprisingly, Sam is also hoping her mentor Sharon will return. “If she ever gets to do it again, then I know she’s going to be successful because she was really good at it,” Sam explained.
As for some new blood on the panel, Sam had an unexpected suggestion: “I quite like the idea of someone like Mary J. Blige being in the judging panel, someone like that.”
