Sam Smith Almost Missed Sir Bob Geldof's Band Aid 30 Call
The Restart singer tells Alan Carr that he never answers unknown numbers so could have lost his place...
Sam Smith has revealed he almost missed Sir Bob Geldof's call to join the Band Aid 30 line-up… because the Boomtown Rats legend called him on a private number.
Speaking on Alan Carr: Chatty Man, the Leave Your Lover hitmaker was asked by the funnyman if Geldof called him up personally to ask him to sing on the charity track, with Sam revealing: "He actually – well I don’t pick up unknown numbers, I have unknown numbers – so he rang me and I immediately gave the phone to my band mate cause I can’t pick up unknown numbers.
"So my band mate picked up and started making funny noises down the phone, and he was like ‘it’s Bob Geldolf’ and he gave it back to me, I was like ‘s**t!’ We had a nice conversation, he’s a lovely guy."
Carr then asked: "What was in like being in a room with all those stars?", to which Smith replied: "If I’m being honest I was a little worried because I thought it’s a lot of people in one room, it could be a bit of an ego fight, but (…) it was amazing."
What use is money, when you need someone to hold?
Don't have direction, I'm just rolling down this road
Waiting for you to bring me in from out the cold
You'll never know the endless nights, the rhyming of the rain
Or how it feels to fall behind and watch you call his name
Pack up and leave everything
Don't you see what I can bring
Can't keep this beating heart at bay
Set my midnight sorrow free
I will give you all of me
Just leave your lover, leave him for me
Leave your lover, leave him for me
We sit in bars and raise our drinks to growing old
Oh, I'm in love with you and you will never know
But if I can't have you I walk this life alone
Spare you the rising storms and let the rivers flow
You'll never know the endless nights the rhyming of the rain
Or how it feels to fall behind and watch you call his name
Pack up and leave everything
Don't you see what I can bring
Can't keep this beating heart at bay
Set my midnight sorrow free
I will give you all of me
Just leave your lover, leave him for me
Leave your lover, leave him for me
Leave your lover, leave him for me
Alan went on to probe Sam if he was ever tempted to pinch Bono's iconic line from the song, with the Stay With Me star stating: "Well, no - everyone - what you did is you went in there and did a full take, so you sang the whole song. I only found out when you found out who was singing the parts."
Alan Carr: Chatty Man airs tonight at 10pm on Channel 4.
