Immaculate Contraception: Our Guide To A Safe SeX-mas
Read this before you whip out that mistletoe
OMG CHRISTMAS IS ALMOST HERE.
As you can probably tell, we're pretty darn excited. Party season is upon us and we are more than ready to go have some festive fun, but obv don't want to be too badly behaved this year...
The combination of festive spirit, Christmas parties and high alcohol consumption means that every year unwanted pregnancy and STI rates spike around the Christmas period, so we’re here to make sure you don’t wake up on Christmas morning with an unwanted gift. Ok, we'll stop with the Chrimbo puns now. Sorry.
Always bring your Christmas wrapping
Yeah, we mean condoms. One of the main reasons people have unsafe sex is simply because they don’t have a condom to hand. So when you’re heading out to your Christmas party, enjoying the time off school or even just having a few festive drinks, make sure you’re prepared. You never know when love (or lust) will strike so make sure you take a condom with you, just in case (girls, we can’t just rely on the dude to bring the condom, best to have one of your own too).
Eat, drink and don’t get too merry
Maybe it’s the cold weather, the festive cheer or just the fact that you might not have work/school in the morning but we all love a drink around Christmas. However, and we’ve all been there, alcohol can lead to bad decisions. When we’re drunk it’s so much easier to forget or neglect contraception, so make sure that if you do decide to have sex you’re in the right frame of mind where you’re doing it safely. Nobody wants a trip to the STI clinic on a hangover.
Don’t have a silent night
Talking about safe sex is the key to practising safe sex. If you feel uncomfortable talking about contraception then you’re much more likely not to use it. So start off talking amongst your mates and make sure by the time you’re having sex you’re in a place where you can comfortably say ‘if we’re not doing it safely, we’re not doing it’. Oh, and if you’re having trouble getting the conversation going we’ve got your back…
Don’t get caught up in the Christmas lull
If you do realise you’ve been unsafe, make sure you don’t wait around to do something about it. You shouldn’t rely on emergency contraception but it is available for just that, emergencies, so it’s important to know where your nearest clinic is. Oh, and while you’re there make sure you get tested for any other unwanted visitors you may have picked up through unsafe sex too.
Deck the halls
Yeah we know, all this safe sex chat might not seem very festive, but thankfully, there’s a way of making ANYTHING Christmassy. We are BIG fans of these Christmas condoms that let you decorate your… *ahem*… tree and make safe sex just that little bit more jolly.
