MTV Records: SG Lewis Talks The Neptunes, Working With Nile Rodgers & His Debut Album
We go crate-digging with the ‘Aura’ producer for Record Store Day 2018…
Earlier this month, SG Lewis released the sublime Dusk - the first instalment of his three-part debut Dusk, Dark, Dawn. He recently sold out a live show at Electric Brixton and has since announced another massive live date in December at London’s Printworks.
Basically, he’s killing it right now.
This Saturday (21st April) marks the UK’s Record Store Day 2018, and to celebrate we took our former MTV Brand New nominee - aka Sam Lewis - to Soho’s Sounds Of The Universe where he lights up talking about The Neptunes, Bob Marley and more, plus what happened the first time he ever DJ’d with vinyl in public…

During our shoot, The Neptunes Present…Clones caught Sam’s eye. “[That record] for me is such an important album,” he said. “I talk about The Neptunes a little bit too much.
“This album is so important because it’s them as producers producing an artist album rather than them just producing for other people. This is them putting their stamp on a project and saying, ‘this is us The Neptunes’ and stepping to the forefront.”
He added: “I read a statistic actually that 65% of commercial radio play in the USA was produced by The Neptunes at one point. Like 65% of all records on radio was made by Pharrell and Chad, it was just crazy.”
Obviously not everything we shot could make it into the final cut, but as we were digging through the disco section Lewis revealed all about his recent studio session with the legendary Nile Rodgers…
“That was just insane!” he reminisced. “I got this email out of the blue from one of my publishers saying ‘do you want to work with Nile Rodgers?’ I was like ‘yes, obviously!’
“We went down to Abbey Road, and luckily I had a bit of time to prepare for the session so I just had a bunch of different ideas ready to go, and luckily when we got to the session he said, ‘do you have anything to start out on?’ So I played this beat I had and straight away he whipped out his guitar, it’s called ‘The Hit Maker’, and he starts like shredding guitar over the top of it, it was the most surreal day for me!
“I basically just got to sit there watching Nile Rodgers play this incredible disco riff over the top of my beat for like 20 minutes and then we wrote a song around it. Hopefully that song sees the light of day but yeah that was one of the most surreal days of my entire life I think.”
We’re praying we can hear that track one day! In the meantime we’ll have to make do with those two new EPs we’re being blessed with later this year.
SG Lewis’ Dusk EP is out now and he's just announced a huge live show at London’s Printworks on 7th December.
Many thanks to Sounds Of The Universe for having us – you can check them out here.
