HOLD UP: Could Snapchat Be Launching A Smartphone?

Yes please and thank you.

iPhone and Google might be dominating the smartphone market right now, but a new contender could be set to shake things up if there's any truth in these rumours hinting that Snapchat could be planning to launcha handset of their own.

The app is certainly leading the way in innovation and its lenses and stories functions have inspired very similar features being incorporated into both Instagram and Facebook.

But now there's talkthat Snapchat are taking a step away from anything they've done before and could be planning to launch their own smartphone in a bid to take on the hardwaremarket.

This is very much speculation and not at all substantiated as yet, but marketing firm Mediakix reckon it's definitely a possibility and would be a logical development followingtheir initial foray into wearable tech last year.

They did this with their video-recording Spectacles, which looked like sunglasses but which had the ability to record snaps handsfree using a camera hidden in the frames.

The reason Mediakix think that a smartphone is a possibility is because Snap Inc. have apparently recently rebranded as a 'camera company', which is included in their IPO filing, and also because ofits recent hires, which involved the company advertising a slewof hardware-related engineering and design roles, with many of these new employees coming from backgrounds at Google, Motorola and Apple.

If you're wondering what a Snapchat phone might be like, Mediakix have a few ideas of their own and suggest a lock screen that allows you to swipe straight into Snapchat,a 360° camera, a one-touch capture button for easily recording snapsand multi-functional volume buttons that also allow you to scroll through filters.

Sounds pretty good, but you'll just have to watch this space and see if there is any basis in this speculation.
