12 Snapchat Hacks That Are Genuinely Useful AF
Find old lenses, get better detail in your drawings and more tricks.
By this point we know you have Snapchat and you know how to do the basics.
But if you want to up your snap game to Kylie Jenner level genius, here's a few sneaky tips and hacks that'll get you all of the irl SC trophies in no time...
1. Switch between front and rear facing cameras while filming video
Keep seeing celebs filming something and then instantly switch camera to gauge their own reaction? Well you can do it too.
All you do is double tap the screen with your fingers as you're filming and the angle will automatically switch. Simples (although do be aware of awkward, surprise up-the-chin shots).
2. Add multiple filters
This is basic af but if you want a geofilter AND a time filter AND a colour filter, just add the first then hold the screen with one finger and swipe the opposite direction until you've chosen another. Take your finger off and hold again as you swipe to add a third.
3. There are hidden colours
If you're still looking for the black and white pen for your Snapchat artworks, they are there, just hidden away.
On the rainbow colour selector try holding and dragging your finger out horizontally to the left side of your screen or vertically for white and down to the bottom of the screen for black. As well as these, you'll find pastel shades of pink, purple, blue and green that way too.
4. Enable hands-free snapping
Having to hold the screen to record a video means you can't get those amazing snaps that maybe you could if you could use a selfie stick or tripod. That is at least until you enable hands-free snapping.
To do this on an iPhone, go to General > Accessibility and turn on Assistive Touch. Click Create New Gesture and tap in the space and hold for 10 seconds. Name it as something memorable and open Snapchat as normal.
You should now see a small white circle with a dot on your screen. Tap and drag it into the Snapchat record button and VOILA, it should record a 10 second video totally hands-free.
5. You can personalise your best friend emojis
The more snaps you send someone, the higher they are classified on your Best Friend scale. This adds a little emoji next to their name in snapchat to show you just how good pals you are and while the default settings are smileys, you can alter them to whatever emojis you like.
Go to Settings > Additional Services > Manage > Friend Emojis and then change to what you fancy and you'll feel like you have legit celebs as pals.
6. Spread out your text
Bored of the character limit on the text function? Hack it by opening your iPhone notes and pressing return about four or five times.
Select and copy the big block of blank space and paste it into your snapchat text box and VOILA, you'll have a longer text box so you can spread your text out to your heart's content.
7. Throw it back to old lenses
If there's a particular lens you love which isn't on offer, you can outfox Snapchat by adjusting the date and time of your phone. In your iPhone settings, switch off automatic date and time and change it to whenever you want.
When you go back onto Snapchat it will then show the lenses that were available on the day you've chosen instead.
8. Create your own geofilter
Yep, if you've got a bit of cash to spare then you can actually DIY one just for you or your next party. The Snapchat website has all the specification details on how to design your filter and then you simply upload, wait for Snapchat to approve, and then pay for how long you want it to be live and where.
9. Use zoom in your vids
Another basic af tip but also one people don't use to its full extent. All you do is use the finger you are using to hold the film button and swipe it up the screen to whatever it is you want to zoom in on.
10. Animate your stickers into your videos
If you don't want your stickers to float on top of your video but actually be a part of it, this one's for you. Place the sticker in the video as usual at the size you want. Wait for the moment or spot you want it to appear in the vid at and hold down on the sticker.
The spinny wheel will appear and then your sticker should hover in the spot you've placed it, slightly wiggling and looking animated.
11. Save yourself some data
If you always run out of data, use Travel Mode to reduce the amount Snapchat uses when you're out and about. Instead of automatically loading snaps, you'll then have to tap to confirm which you want to download.
To switch it on go to Settings > Additional Services > Manage and swipe Travel Mode on.
12. Get better detail on your drawings
If you feel like you have sausages for fingers when it comes to drawing, zooming in can help you get finer detail on your Snapchat etchings.
To do this go to General > Accessibility > Zoom and turn on Zoom. Now go back into Snapchat and select the pen tool. You should now be seeing a zoom window you can draw into and when you move it, your drawing should appear as normal.
