Get To Know: Soul Clap
The next artist in our Get To Know series are Soul Clap...
These guys are an American DJ and production due from Boston, Massachusetts and you need to listen to their music ASAP.
If you’re a fan of funk, these guys are for you. We caught up with them to find out a little bit more about them, check it out below…
1. For those who don’t know about you and your music, tell us a little bit about who you are and where you’re from…
We're a couple of ravers from Boston. Grew up with the funk and jazz. Been DJing almost 20 years each. Spend our time with our Crew Love fam and now have two album under our belts.
2. Describe your sound in three words…
3. Who inspired you to start a career in music?
Some of the pivotal characters in our development as musicians, DJs, and just good people. Our original business partner Sammy Sokol, Caril & Tom from the Vinyl Connection record shop in Boston, Tim Burnett from MN2S, the great DJ Kon, Paulo and Henry from Airdrop Records, Gadi and Zev from Wolf + Lamb and our dear friend and loyal agent Goli from the GEIST agency. Of course there are so many more, after all, like they say, it takes a village!
4. Who are your biggest musical influences?
George Clinton, Masters At Work, Herbie Hancock, A Tribe Called Quest, Bob Marley, to name a few!
5. Tell us about the writing and recording process for your new single/album…
The most wonderful thing about this new album is that there was plenty of time to let all the music organically develop. Many of the initial ideas started as rough demos recorded in home studios, on airplanes and generally on the go. Then the ideas were flushed out in bigger studios with session musicians and listened to over and over until we knew they were right. Then we took the music to great Martin Buttrich who mixed the album in Barcelona over a three week period that we spent together. We brought the funk and the spirit but he's really the one who gave this new album a pair of cajones!
6. What can we expect from your live shows?
Funk. Percussion. Polyrhythms. Disco. House. Afro. Latin. Whatever.
7. What has been your biggest career highlight so far?
That's gotta be either working with George Clinton and Sly Stone on our In Da Kar EP. Or working with Louie Vega on the track we did for his new album along with Nick Monaco.
8. Have you met anyone and been totally starstruck?
Eli saw Larry David walking down the street in Brooklyn last month and was so star struck he couldn't even go say hi. Charlie saw Leonardo DiCaprio standing outside of the New Marcy Hotel, said hello and invited him in, and then realised how crazy he must have sounded!
9. What’s on your iPod/playlists that people wouldn’t expect?
Kaytranda. Anderson Paak. Death Grips. Frank Zappa.
10. When can we see you live?
We're currently on tour and have been adding the live performance to about half of our shows. It's really been depending on the venue and crowd. But when can you see us live? The long answer is, it depends which city but the short answer is, right now!
