This Interview With One Of The Delhi Rapists Is The Worst Thing You’ll Read Today

Warning - very sad, troubling reading...

In 2012 six men brutally raped and beat a 23 year old physiotherapy student in Delhi, India. Sadly she succumbed to her injuries two weeks later. Mukesh Singh, one of the men convicted of the horrific crime, blames the victim for the attack and its eventual outcome.

Singh was sentenced to death for the crime in 2013. He gave an interview to BBC while awaiting his execution – and we couldn’t believe what we saw. Here are just some of his quotes:

“A decent girl won't roam around at nine o'clock at night.”

“A girl is far more responsible for rape than a boy.”

“Boys and girls are not equal. Housework and housekeeping is for girls, not roaming in discos and bars at night doing wrong things, wearing wrong clothes.”

“When being raped, she shouldn't fight back. She should just be silent and allow the rape. Then they'd have dropped her off after doing her ....”

Singh also warned that the sentencing of him and his accomplices will only lead to more lethal rapes, as men will fear prosecution. His words highlight India’s concerning cultural approach to sexual violence and misogyny towards women. However, the incident has sparked large protests in India’s capital, as people take to the streets to fight for women’s rights and laws to address inequality – a cause we should all be fighting for, no matter where we live.
