Godzilla Director Gareth Edwards To Helm Star Wars Spin-Off

Brit confirms that he'll be taking charge of Lucasfilm project...

British filmmaker Gareth Edwards is attached to direct one of the spin-off movies in the revived Star Wars franchise.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that the director - currently enjoying his first box office hit with Godzilla - will be taking charge of one of the high-profile films.

And Edwards himself confirmed the news with a statement, writing: "Ever since I saw Star Wars I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life - join the Rebel Alliance!

"I could not be more excited & honoured to go on this mission with Lucasfilm."

Disney - which purchased Lucasfilm and the rights to the Star Wars empire for $2bn - has previously revealed that there are likely to be three spin-off films and that they'll be released in between the main franchise episodes.

Edwards' film is claimed by THR to be set for release on 16 December, 2016.

JJ Abrams recently wrote a heartfelt note to his cast and crew on Star Wars Epsiode VII.
