Review: A2 & Stormzy Live At Brixton Academy 03/05/2017

Stormzy blew us away during the second leg of his three-night stay at London's legendary Brixton Academy.

First and foremost, BIG shout out to A2 for kicking off the show. His energy clearly got the crowd pumped and his smooth flow had the crowd vibing. His track ‘X2 (DBLE)’ was clearly a favourite with the audience, and he left the stage with Brixton hyped up and ready for what the rest of the evening had in store. It was clear why he’s backed by Stormzy, along with many others, and we can’t wait to see what’s next from this talented guy.

S T O R M Z Y - the light boxes on stage spelled out the main man’s name one letter at a time as the suspense rose in the crowd. Stormzy aptly kicked off the show with ‘First Things First’ and it was apparent from the get-go that this was going to be a special night. The production of the show was incredible, with numerous light boxes each containing amazing 3D graphics which changed to suit each track. Despite the engaging production, Stormzy was without a doubt where everyone’s attention was focussed as he owned the whole stage from the second he arrived on it.

The crowd went crazy as Stormzy broke into album favourite ‘Cold’, and his expressive and passionate performance made it impossible for the crowd to not get fully involved. Next,Stormzy went into the archive and pulled out ‘WS4M’ before delving back in 'GSAP' and getting the crowd involved in what was to be the first of many mass singalongs for‘Velvet / Jenny Francis Interlude’.

The pace was turned up for an energetic performance of 'Mr Skeng', andStormzy made sure the crowd was as pumped as him, frequently asking: ‘do we have energy?’ Keeping his fans involved the man himself encouraged another sing a long to his track with Kehlani, the vibey ‘Cigarettes and Cush’.

Next up, Stormzy went in for ‘Bad Boys’, with the light boxes all representing prisoners in their cells, casting a darker tone on his set. Much to the crowd’s delight the one and only Ghetts joined Stormzy for this one bringing his mad energy to the stage as Ghetts does.

The next guests to the stage were a bunch of mini Gs, a crew of kids joined Stormzy for ‘Return of the Rucksack’, which the crowd was absolutely loving and Stormzy credited them as the real stars of the show! Stormz then showed off his softer side, as well his vocals, with a soulful performance of ‘Blinded By Your Grace pt 1’.

Stormzy introduced the next track with a confession that there would be no more special guests, but this had no effect on the crowd’s enthusiasm or enjoyment as big Mike was absolutely killing it up there on his own.

In replacement of a special guest, Stormzy invited the crowd to be involved in a collab instead and went into Ed Sheeran’s ‘Shape Of You’ – and the crowd bellowed the hook as Stormzy took it away on his verses. The crowd remained putty in Stormzy’s hands as he rounded things up with ‘21 Gun Salute’ and ‘Lay Me Bare’.

Big Mike returned on stage without his t-shirt to a mass cheer and went straight into his huge single, ‘Big for Your Boots’, which had the crowd going wild! He asked the crowd again ‘Do we have energy?’ but it was clear that there was a MAD energy in the room as he went into ‘Shut Up’, with every single person on the ‘da da da da da da da da’ chant. He didn’t stop there and treated the crowd to an explosive rendition of ‘Where Do You Know Me From?’ accompanied by stage side fireworks.

Stormzy spoke throughout the gig about his faith and so it only seemed appropriate to end things with a passionate performance of ‘Blinded By Your Grace Pt 2’, which saw Stormzy leap off the stage and join his fans at the front of the crowd. The room was filled with confetti, creating a magical atmosphere.

The crowd began chanting ‘Stormzy, Stormzy’ and to their absolute delight their man ran back on stage straight back into ‘Where Do You Know Me From?’ with the crowd joining him word for word.

HUGE props and respect to Stormzy, the show exceeded all expectations on every level. The production was excellent, Stormzy’s performance was flawless and demonstrated his diverse strengths as an artist. It was impossible to watch him without a smile on your face. His energy and passion flowed into the crowd and his constant involvement of his fans made every person there feel special and a part of the show.
