Off-screen Depp is a music fan with a passion for playing guitar and has been honoured with many awards voted on by the public.
The MTV Generation Award is the MTV Movie Awards highest honour, acknowledging an actor who can be counted on to engage the MTV audience with everything he does.
Depp joins the likes of Jim Carrey, who have all won the accolade.
