US viewers got a shock in the final episode of serial killer drama Dexter last night, with the death of a favourite character.
Having survived a shooting in the penultimate episode, Dexter's sister Debra (played by Jennifer Carpenter) suffered a stroke and viewers saw Dexter turn off her life-support machine.
Actor Michael C Hall's antihero told her: "I can't leave you like this. I'm your big brother."
And left distraught by Deb's death, he opted not to join Hannah and Harrison for a new life in Argentina.
"I destroy everyone I love. I can't let that happen to Hannah, to Harrison," E! Online reported him as explaining. "I have to protect them—from me."
And he melted viewers' hearts by calling Harrison to tell him: "I just want to tell you one last time that I love you."
He then piloted his boat into the path of a hurricane - and was later confirmed by a newspaper to have died.
But there was another twist with the further revelation that he was actually alive and living a new life as a lumberjack.
