MTV Review: Stuck In Love
Lily Collins shines bright in this rollercoaster ride of a love flick...
UK Release Date: 14th June 2013
Running Time: 96 minutes
Cast: Lily Collins, Logan Lerman, Jennifer Connelly, Greg Kinnear, Kristen Bell, Nat Wolff, Liana Liberato, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Rusty Joiner
Director: Josh Boone
Plot: Originally titled A Place For Me, Stuck In Love tells the tale of critically-acclaimed novelist Bill Borgens (Kinnear) who is still obsessed with ex-wife Erica (Connelly) after she left him for another man. Meanwhile, his fiercely independent daughter Samantha (Collins) is following in his footsteps by publishing her first book - while also trying to deal with the attention from diehard romantic Lou (Lerman). Sam's younger brother Rusty (Wolff) is also an aspiring writer, who in a bid to gain some life experience, falls for troubled soul Kate (Liberato).
When these three romantic situations intertwine with poignant and hilarious results, the Borgens family finds itself hurtling towards surprising resolutions and revelations, after which none of them will ever be the same.
Best Scene: While the film moves at a slow pace (starting and ending with Thanksgiving) a stand-out part is when Rusty finally gets dream girl Kate's attention at a house party. After seeing her boyfriend knock her to the ground, Rusty shouts: "Hey asshole!", before punching him square on the nose. His friend then asks: "Who are you", to which he replies: "I'm the all new and improved Rusty Borgen" - earning a few laughs from the audience.
Best One Liner: While Rusty's quote was a front runner for the best line, Samantha's cynical approach to romance steals this title. When asked her opinions on relationships, she states: "Just avoid love at all costs, that's my motto" - which sums up her character perfectly.
Date Movie or Mate Movie?: Both. You can either cosy up to your girlfriend / boyfriend with a bucket of popcorn and ride this rollercoaster ride of love, or gush over screen eye-candy in the form of Lily Collins, Logan Lerman and a very sweaty Kristen Bell with your friend.
Best Scene Stealer: While Lily Collins' eyebrows prove to be a distraction throughout the film, not even a brief cameo from author Stephen King could steal the limelight from Tricia (Bell) running down a beach wearing a bra-top and tight leggings.
Best WTF Moment: Just when you think Kate is free from her tormented past, it comes back to haunt her at Samantha's book party - causing huge upset for Rusty. Lou is also keeping a heart-wrenching secret from Sam, so be sure to have a packet of tissues nearby.
MTV Rating: While Stuck In Love is not your average boy-meets-girl story, the movie offers an insight into life as a part of a broken family. Refreshing performances from the likes of Collins, Kinnear and Lerman also set this flick apart from the rest. However, we warn you now of its very predictable ending.
