The original fashion doll is firmly back in fashion. Feted at Moschino’s Milan show and re-styled by Chanel creative director Karl Lagerfeld, at the age of 55, Barbie is having something of a renaissance.
Launched in March 1959, Barbara Millicent Roberts - to give her full name - made her first public appearance wearing just a strapless, striped swimsuit and a pair of sunglasses. Since then she has gone on to amass a wardrobe full of haute couture, with designers including Oscar de la Renta, Dior and Burberry creating outfits especially for her. Accessories brand Coach gave Barbs her first ever real leather handbag, while Vera Wang made her a wedding gown fit for Kate Middleton.
Meanwhile, in the last month alone, Moschino created a whole collection in her honour (Barbie, of course, got one of every piece in her size) and Karl Lagerfeld has given her a $200 monochrome make-over, which sees Barbie don his signature fingerless gloves, shades, starched collar and ponytail.
Even more recently she’s turned her hand to fashion blogging, with the launch of the Barbie Style Instagram page, which is filled with Vogue-worthy photos of outfit flat-lays and her glamorous friends like Jeremy Scott and Rachel Zoe, giving us serious Insta-envy. If you think you can handle it, check out the top 50 Barbie collaborations below. Life in plastic has never been more fantastic.
