Jack Black’s 10 Greatest Moments
From School Of Rock to Anchorman, Jack Black is really frickin’ funny…
By Gary Ogden
It's Jack Black's birthday on August 28th, and the perpetual man-child is a staggering 44 years old! To celebrate the fact that he's still behaving like a 12-year-old (so are we Jack, so are we), here are his 10 greatest moments…
Tropic Thunder – The Fatties
The funny thing about this is that it actually happened in another film – The Nutty Professor. This version is taking the mick out of that, although how exactly is still a mystery, because it's the exact same joke. But that's not to say it isn't funny, because it is. Look, no matter what you say or think, farts will always be funny.
Gulliver's Travels – It's Cool
We all know what it's like trying to pluck up the courage to ask out our crush (and subsequently, failing to pluck up said courage), and Black perfectly sums up our frustration at this most horrendous of moments. He also perfectly captures trying to be cool in front of your crush (and again, subsequently failing). Like that time you walked into a lamppost in front of that group of hotties – remember that? We do. We saw it.
Nacho Libre - Get That Corn Outta My Face
When you've had a stressful day, the last thing you want anyone to do is stick a corn on the cob under your nose. No thanks – a nice lie down and a cup of tea please, not a boiling hot, smelly, greasy piece of impossible-to-eat maize. Jack Black's the same – don't give it to him. Otherwise it'll be on the floor in no time.
School Of Rock – Legend Of The Rent
School Of Rock is arguably Jack Black's finest hour (and a half), because he basically gets to go as mental as he wants throughout the whole thing. He's also playing rock music, which he likes, don't you know? In this scene he makes up a song about not paying rent, and it's pretty darn catchy. We tried singing it to our landlord the other day but he still made us pay, which is completely unfair, but whatever. We had guitars and everything.
Tenacious D in The Pick Of Destiny – First Meeting
Ok, so maybe Jack Black gets to be even more Jack Black in this film than he does in School Of Rock. Main reason being he gets to swear in this one. Depicted above is the fictional first meeting (although wouldn't it be amazing if this was actually how they first met), in which an impromptu singsong occurs as a result of Black's awe when hearing Kyle Gass play on the street.
Jack Black is funny in real life too! What shock! Here he is getting hounded by paps whilst out on his bike (how he keeps his cool is beyond us – it looks annoying to the max), and yet still managing to be funny. An audience is an audience we suppose, no matter where you are.
High Fidelity – Barry
One of Black's best roles is as Barry, the up-himself record store assistant with ideas above his station. We've all met them, smarmy shop-employees who judge you the minute you walk in, and then subsequently make you feel like poo for wanting something not considered 'cool'. Look, if we want S Club 7's Greatest Hits then you better give us S Club 7's Greatest Hits!
Nacho Libre – Fart Attack
Another one from Nacho Libre (we love this film), in which Nacho has a hilarious fight with Esqueleto, his peculiar sidekick. What makes this scene is the fart before the jump though. What a perfect demonstration of comedy timing. Remember what we said about farts? It also applies here.
We've picked a whole film here – Bernie. It's based on a fascinating true story of a well-loved small-town mortician who murders his 81-year-old millionaire friend. It's a strange tale, and making it into a film starring Jack Black may have seemed a tad insensitive, but he dials it down here, and puts in a fantastic performance. In fact, it's hard to think of anyone else who would have been more perfect for the role.
Anchorman – Burrito Crash
Everyone remembers Anchorman for all of Will Ferrell's brilliant lines, but one of the best moments in the film doesn't belong to him. Jack is only in Anchorman for about two minutes, but he gives the film one of its most memorable and hilarious (and meanest) scenes. Basically, don't put Jack Black in your movie unless you want the scene stolen from under your nose.
