Monica Martin’s Phox-y Style Guide
The Phox frontwoman shares her fashion essentials, celebrity favourites and what she thinks of her bandmates’ style…
By Jennifer Lynn
We can’t decide if being the only girl in a band with five guys sounds like a dream or a nightmare, but for Phox frontwoman Monica Martin it’s her reality, and she wears it well. The indie folk band have just released their self-titled debut album, and while we can best compare them to the sweet sounds of The Lumineers, there’s something a little more vintage about Monica’s style.
We caught up with the lady herself to find out more about her throwback fashion and working with all those boys…
MTV Style: How would you describe your personal style in three words?
Monica Martin: Classic on tilt.
MTV Style: How does your onstage style differ from your 'day off' wardrobe?
Monica: There was a time that I wore the lovely little things that made me happy no matter what I was doing; think hiking or biking in cowboy boots and a satin skirt.
After years of rapidly deteriorating cool vintage pieces for the sake of upholding how I see myself, I decided to get comfy things to wear inside the van on eight hour drives, and just change before the show.
MTV Style: What one item in your wardrobe could you not live without and why?
Monica: Shoes with height, for my sanity.
MTV Style: How do your fashion choices impact on your mood or how you feel on stage?
Monica: I was a hairdresser before playing music, so expression through hair, make-up, and clothing has always been a part of my life. I do it for me… If I have a day off, I still put my hair together or I just won’t leave bed. It’s my routine, my meditative space, and how I look is a reflection of how I’m feeling or how I want to be feeling.
MTV Style: Where are your favourite places to shop for clothes and accessories?
Monica: There’s a surplus of used clothing on this planet, it’s foolish to not explore that and I find great things at thrift stores outside of cities where the prices haven’t shot through the roof. I found teal suede Liz Claiborne pumps for $3.50 at a place in southern Wisconsin. Nasty Gal has really nice basics that - from what I hear - are made in an ethical way, so I appreciate that type of business as well.
MTV Style: Which celebrity do you think always gets it right?
Monica: I’m not completely in touch with what’s going on with celebs, but every time I see Adele she looks perfect: the romantic fabrics, the pretty necklines, frequently in black and huge hair.
MTV Style: Do the boys in the band ever give you their opinions on what you're wearing?
Monica: They are indifferent to my style efforts, but on the rare occasion I'm lost between shoes to wear for a day, I force them to help me choose.
MTV Style: How would you describe their collective style?
Monica: They keep themselves together nicely, mostly breezy and classic, but retain the spirit to do whatever they feel any given day. Anywhere from chambray tucked into denim to mad scientist with a pink bowl-cut.
MTV Style: What's your number one beauty secret?
Monica: Having an open heart, sounds cliché, but it trumps all else.
MTV Style: Five essentials you couldn’t live without at festivals this summer?
Monica: High waisted skirt, Stila liquid eyeliner, NARS Taj Mahal blush, Shwoods sunnies and a handkerchief for the sweatiest days of my life.
