With Record Store Day fast approaching, pay homage to Empire Records and make like Liv Tyler in this classic '90s outfit...
Saturday 19 April is the seventh annual Record Store Day, a 24-hour celebration harking back to a time when music still came with sleeves and people thought MP3 was a Star Wars character.
In honour of this year’s Record Store Day, swap the iPod for a Walkman and channel a pre-Middle Earth Liv Tyler in 1995’s Empire Records, a film that glorified independent record stores and made us all wish we had a group of co-workers so tight they would throw us a funeral.
Tyler played Corey Mason in the grunge-era cult classic, rocking a fluffy blue sweater and easy-off plaid skirt in the hope of dazzling her celebrity crush, a Tango-coloured crooner named Rex Manning. Luckily for Liv, the encounter with Rex ends in crushing disappointment, freeing up the pill popping straight A student to fall in love with adorable A.J., an artistic slacker who’s been pining for Corey the whole time. Cue ‘Awwws’ all round.
To copy Corey’s Clueless meets Nirvana style, pair a cute cropped sweater with a buckled plaid skirt and team with some stompy boots for an outfit that will take you from record store to rock show.
Top the whole thing off with a ‘Rex Manning Day’ badge for some era-appropriate ‘90s irony and repeat after us: “Damn the man, save the Empire!”
