Ones To Watch | Tom Ryling
Tom Ryling's current career credentials are enough to make even the most seasoned multi-tasker look at their diary and crawl back to bed.
Artist, writer, style director and online editor for LOVE magazine, it's Tom's men's fashion line that caught the eye of District MTV, when he showed as part of the Fashion East installations at London Collections: Men SS14. Here Tom shares the inspirations behind said collection, what he's got planned for AW14 and which friend of Kanye West's he thinks is a frickin' genius.
MTV: What was the inspiration behind your SS14 collection?
Tom Ryling: I was looking back at my memories of being a kid, running along the beaches of the quite grim English seaside, and more recent experiences of hanging out in North Africa.
MTV: Can you talk us through the fabrics you worked with? We loved the contrast of the sackcloth and transparent PVC…
TR: I always loved sackcloth for its almost historic feeling; it's a proper utilitarian fabric and mixing it with PVC gave it this sense of futurism and luxury. They're both not necessarily typical clothing fabrics, but that's what makes them so interesting to work with on the body.
MTV: How has showing as part of the Fashion East installations helped you as a designer?
TR: I properly adore the Fashion East crew and the platform they've given me is just amazingly appreciated. They've let me speak to an audience, share my thoughts and it's always cool exhibiting alongside your peers.
DMTV: What can we expect from you for AW14 – any resounding themes or ideas?
TR: For many reasons, our current social environment being one, I'm looking towards something a bit darker and harder. There'll be a sense of magical realism, but with this hit of toughness.
DMTV: Which other designers' work are you enjoying at the moment?
TR: I think Bobby Abley's making great stuff and I'm always into Chris Shannon's visions. Internationally I really do think Riccardo [Tisci] at Givenchy is a bit of a genius.
DMTV: What three tracks would be on your perfect studio soundtrack?
TR: At the moment I'd say 'Sugarcane' by Sleigh Bells (my current morning anthem), 'Montague Terrace' by Scott Walker ('cos I love him) and 'On My Own' by Peach (total '90s one hit wonder)
DMTV: Are there any famous types you'd like to give a Tom Ryling makeover to?
TR: I'm a big believer in letting people dress how they want :)
DMTV: How do you juggle your designing with your editing, writing, art, etc?
TR: It's kind of just how I've always worked – different day, different project. Sometimes I think about focusing on one medium for a decent period of time. Maybe one day!
DMTV: Describe your own personal style in three words…
TR: The morning after...
