MTV Style: When you start designing a collection, where does your inspiration come from?
Vicky Pattison: For me it all comes from things I like, things I see other people wearing, taking things I see on the catwalk and adapting them. Kim Kardashian might look f**king fantastic every day of the week, but you can hardly stroll into the office in half the stuff she wears!
It’s all well and good being Kim or being Victoria Beckham and being able to dress like that all the time, but I need to take those ideas and adapt them for the everyday woman, who does work in a call centre or does have kids and is busy.
MTV Style: Just speaking of celebs like Kim and VB, who would you most like to see wearing your collection?
Vicky: Cheryl Cole. It’s a complete pipe dream, but I would just absolutely love it. Cheryl Cole or Kim Kardashian. Definitely.
MTV Style: What’s been the biggest challenge when designing?
Vicky: Making clothes that I would wear and that I feel confident and proud to sell, that won’t break the bank, but that are still made properly. You can find a print you love, but then you feel the fabric and think, ‘Well that’s not going to last two minutes!’
When you find the material that is going to last, that is going to wash well and flatter a woman’s figure, it’s twice the price. I don’t want to charge women twice the price! It has been quite difficult.
MTV Style: Would you consider doing a higher end collection at some point, where you can make it a bit pricier?
Vicky: Yeah, we do have a few bits where girls can say, ‘Oh I want that for that wedding’. Slightly higher end pieces within the collection. Once the range has proved itself and it is flying, I would love to have something bigger, and expand. We did have to start small, but I’m just excited to see it grow.
MTV Style: The other Geordie Shore girls all have their own collections as well, so what we want to know is, which celebrity would you dress in each of their lines? Let’s start with Holly…
Vicky: I would put Kim Kardashian in Holly’s collection, because Holly’s gorgeous, she’s curvy, her stuff is feminine and really sexy, and Kim Kardashian is really sexy. I think they’re a perfect match for each other.
MTV Style: Moving on to Charlotte…
Vicky: I would probably say someone like Jasmin Walia in Charlotte’s, because they’re both very slim with lovely long legs, and I think they can pull off almost anything. Jasmin would be an excellent ambassador for Charlotte’s stuff.
MTV Style: And then Marnie…
Vicky: I haven’t actually seen Marnie’s collection, so I couldn’t comment on hers.
MTV Style: What’s the most indulgent item of clothing you’ve ever bought?
Vicky: About a month ago I treated myself to a Victoria Beckham dress, which I have nowhere to wear [laughs], let’s be serious here. Where am I going to wear that?! And it’s a two and a half grand dress. Where am I going in that?!
MTV Style: How has your style adapted since you lost so much weight?
Vicky: I’ve definitely become more confident and slightly more adventurous, but I don’t feel the need to have everything out at once anymore; I’d probably describe it as ‘quietly confident’. I used to have boobs out or legs out, or both, but I think that was a lot to do with my age as well. As I’ve gotten older and lost the weight, I’ve realised it can be sexier just to wear like a pencil dress and have your back out, or something like that.
MTV Style: Are you always conscious of your eating or is it just a subconscious thing now that you don’t eat junk food?
Vicky: It’s difficult when you’ve been bigger, you’ve been unhappy, you’ve faced all those demons and got yourself to a place where you feel comfortable. You’ll never truly let your hair down and eat what you want once you’ve been to the dark side. For me, I think I’ve finally hit the balance right, and I’ve found a bit of moderation. I do go out and have wild nights out, have a few gin and tonics, and the next day all I want to do is eat Doritos and cake. But everyone has those days, and you have to have them to stop yourself going mad. It’s important to enjoy life and have those days where you throw caution to the wind, and go, ‘f**k this’.
MTV Style: If you are having one of those days, what’s your go-to 'bad' food?
Vicky: I’m terrible; you know how people will say they have a sweet tooth? I just have a food tooth! I love eating, I really do, and it’s always a social thing. If me and my sister or me and my mates are hungover, we order a Dominos, and it’s the best thing! You get your chicken strips, you get your Pepperoni Passion, your cookies for afters and sit there drinking all the Diet Coke you want.
MTV Style: We spoke to Millie Mackintosh at her clothing range launch the other week and she commented on how great you look; is she someone who you admire?
Vicky: Millie Mackintosh is like my ultimate girl crush. I try not to say this too often, so she doesn’t become scared of me and avoid us at all times, but I’m a little bit in love with her [laughs]. She’s so pretty and naturally attractive; I loved her in Made In Chelsea. She was just the right mix of a sweet, innocent, nice girl and a feisty nutcase. The way she used to haul them f**kin’ martinis around? Go lass! I loved it. I love that she’s sort of reinvented herself in the worlds of fitness and fashion. Those are two things I’m massively interested in, so I do admire her in that respect, and I think she always looks fantastic.
