Sum 41singer Deryck Whibley is in hospital after being beaten up by three men in Japan.

The attack took place as he drank in a bar with bandmates Tom Thacker, Jason McCaslin and Steve Jocz. The Fat Lip rockers are in Japan to perform at the Summer Sonic Festival in Osaka and Tokyo.

The 30-year-old singer – the ex-husband of Avril Lavigne – was rushed to hospital where an MRI scan revealed a slipped disc in his back. He also sustained cuts and bruising.

Following the assault, the band released a statement on their official website: "It is unfortunate to say, but Deryck Whibley is still in the hospital.

"He was attacked in Japan. We are waiting for results and we are hoping for the best. Thanks for your support."

Despite his injuries, Deryck is hopeful Sum 41’s scheduled appearances at the Summer Sonic Festival will go ahead. A post on the band’s Twitter page said: "Despite doctors' instructions, he has decided to play at Summer Sonic regardless."

Police are investigating the attack.
