Live Review: Sum 41 At O2 Academy Brixton

Four years ago, Sum 41's Deryck Whibley was facing multiple organ failures. Fast-forward to 2017 and he's sober, having fun and is in the form of his life.

“I’m having a lot of fun tonight. I’m sober, so you know I really mean that.”

Over three years ago, Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley was facing multiple organ failures. Years of hard-drinking, hard-partying and blurry tours had left the artist in an induced coma, his liver and kidneys seemingly on their last legs.

For the first year after being admitted to the hospital back in 2013, Whibley could barely even walk, and he definitely couldn’t play guitar.

"My whole brain felt like it reset," he told Rolling Stone. "Even speaking was difficult because my motor skills were so f*cked up. When I picked up the guitar I knew where my fingers were supposed to go, but I couldn't make them do it. It was almost like when I first learned how to play guitar at 13."

Fast-forward to 2 March 2017, and not only is Deryck Whibley back on his feet, but he’s sprinting around Brixton Academy almost non-stop. He’s sober, he’s got a guitar in his hands, and he’s back in the form of his life.

WATCH THE 'IN TOO DEEP' MUSIC VIDEO BELOW:

Sum 41’s show in Brixton last night came about as close as you could get to a greatest hits set, playing a range of songs from the band’s 20-year history. (20!) The Canadian group brought an army of their own lights – and an inflatable skeleton flipping the bird – to London for an energetic set. The best reactions of the night were reserved for their early-2000s hits, especially ‘In Too Deep’ and ‘Fat Lip’, but Frank Zummo’s dedicated drum solo and Whibley’s performance of ‘Crash’, alone on the piano, were other highlights.

Today (March 3), Sum 41 announced that they’ll be going on tour with Pierce The Veil later in the year. Go grab some tickets.
