John Mayer Is "Fine" With Not Being As Successful As Ex-Taylor Swift
Star also praises T-Swizzle decision to remove her music from Spotify, as well as revealing some words of wisdom he gave to Iggy Azalea...
John Mayer has stated he “isn’t bothered” that his music will never sell as much as ex-girlfriend Taylor Swift.
However, during an interview on The Today Show, the singer did admit that he DOES get jealous of big artists like T-Swizzle and Kanye West, adding that he admires her decision to pull her music from streaming service Spotify.
Speaking of Tay, Mayer said: “There's only like 2% of the music industry has 80% of the media about it. There’s like four people who get all the press.
“There are going to be times when I make music as popular or empirically valuable as [Swift’s] in terms of making pop music that won’t sell as many copies and I’m fine with that.
He continued: “Look, if I save a baby from a burning building and Kanye saves a baby from a burning building, there's more Google news hits on Kanye. I'm fine with it.”
And when it comes to Swift’s Spotify decision, the 37-year old claimed that Swift had “the loudest voice” of all artists, explaining: “The cynical people could say you're helping yourself, but it’s trickled down.
“You're not saying ‘I want this just for me’. I think it’s a really cool thing for a musician to do.”
Mayer also went on to speak about his romance with the Shake It Off singer - who he dated in 2009 - stating that people should stop speculating whether track Paper Doll was about T-Swizzle.
He revealed: “I put out a song called Paper Doll. The song never got listened to as a song. It became a news story because of the lyrics I’m not in the business of telling people what the song is about.
“I never said anything about it. And now I just go, ‘Look, I can say the name Taylor Swift. She's an artist. I'm an artist. Let's just...everybody stop. Nobody's got an incurable cancer. We're rich people who get to live out our dreams. Let's just stop it.’
“I’m a musician who's bigger than one song or one record. It's really about the longevity of all the work that goes together, and I'm just not interested in the things that won't last forever.”
In the same interview, Mayer also recalled how he reached out to Iggy Azalea with some words of wisdom, stating that he wanted her not to strive for perfection like he once did.
He explained: “I wrote to this new up-and-coming Australian rapper – I don’t wanna give her name away because there are so many of them – and I said ‘This is it. Don’t be upset that you'r feeling like you're just an inch away from having your cake here. This is the new way its going to be. You're never going to do it seamlessly’.”
Wise words indeed John…
Who you love
You love, who you love
Who you love
My girl, she ain't the one that I saw coming
And sometimes I don't know which way to go
And I tried to run before
But I'm not running anymore
Cause I've fought against it hard enough to know
That you love, who you love
Who you love
You love, who you love
Who you love
You love, who you love
Who you love
Oh, you can't make yourself stop dreaming
Who you're dreaming of
If it's who you love
Then it's who you love
My boy, he ain't the one that I saw coming
And some have said his heart's too hot to hold
And it takes a little time
But you should see him when he shines
Cause you never wanna let that feeling go
When you love, who you love
Who you love
You love, who you love
Who you love
Yeah, you love, who you love
Who you love
Oh, you can't make yourself stop dreaming
Who you're dreaming of
If it's who you love
Then it's who you love
Oh, you love, who you love
Who you love
You love, who you love
Who you love
You love, who you love
Who you love
Oh, you can't make yourself stop dreaming
Who you're dreaming of
If it's who you love
Then it's who you love
It's who you love
Who you love
Who you love
Who you love
You're the one I love
