As if Taylor Swift hadn't already taken enough flack about her perfectly harmless video for Shake It Off, the pop star has now been compared to a "hip aunt".

But rather than rise to the bait, the 24-year-old country pop superstar has elected to laugh along with the joke.

Tumblr user youareinloves wrote: "Taylor swift is like that aunt that tries to be 'hip' with the young'ns and 'with the times' and then asks you what does bae stand for and after you tell her she starts calling everything bae even the lamp next to the couch."

But the internet critic was no doubt stunned when she received a reply from Swifty herself.

She wrote: "HEY YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE LAMP NEXT TO MY COUCH AND I WILL HAVE YOU KNOW THAT IT IS, IN FACT, VERY MUCH BAE. #you're right though"

And the star ensured it got to a wider audience by sharing it on Twitter and adding: "Some really important conversations are happening on Tumblr."

And the mystery critic admitted the response had been a shock, writing: "I was laying in bed watching a movie and I went to check tumblr to see if anything actually had happened and I saw that the post had 40 notes and I was like 'oh maybe some big blog reblogged it' and that big blog turned out to be TAYLOR SWIFT!!! and I threw my phone across the room and now it has a crack on it and then I flew out of my bed to my desk and I FLIPPED OUT."
