Jendella Benson: Life Goes On

When you become a teen mum, your life is over, right?
At least that’s what people usually say.
Many teen mums don’t even get a ‘congratulations’ when they tell others that they are pregnant, as many people are convinced that this is a terrible thing.
I’ll be honest, I have a few friends who got pregnant when we were teenagers, and when they first told me, I didn’t know how to react. All I knew was that their lives were about to change beyond what I could understand at that time.
As we’ve gotten older, I’ve realised that your life changes when you become a parent at whatever age. Sacrifice is a given when it comes to having kids, but that doesn’t mean that your life does – or should - completely stop.
It can feel like some people think teen mums should be punished for their choices, almost like they get some weird sort of ‘satisfaction’ from seeing them struggle. However, while there may be tough times, there will be plenty of times to celebrate too. There will be birthdays and christenings and nights out and holidays and romance and all that good stuff.
And why shouldn’t there be? Just because you may not make the same life choices someone else has, doesn’t mean that their life is going to be awful. There’s no need for us to put others down in order to feel better about our own lives.
Witnessing my friends raise their wonderful children, one thing is clear: while everyone else is tutting, debating and discussing their lives, young mums are brilliant at just getting on with it.
