New Music Round-Up: Kanye West, Gorillaz, The 1975, Drake...
Maroon 5, Charli XCX, Rex Orange County, J HUS and more also released new music
Kanye West – ‘Ye’
Is it like The Life of Pablo? Has it got some 808s & Heartbreak in there? Is it a return to old-Kanye, the likes of College Dropout? A lot of words have been said by those who attended the album streaming party in Wyoming, but now it’s time for the album to speak for itself.
J Hus – Big Spang
J Hus comes through with an EP of 3 tracks, including the absolute bop ‘Dancing Man’. This is J Hus keeping up what he does his best.
The 1975 – ‘Give Yourself A Try’
The 1975 pick up a new vibe on this new track. It feels almost like an indie-pop / punk interpretation of Joy Division’s ‘Disorder’, pitched up – it’s pretty infectious and will probably be stuck in your head shortly. Not only that, but in an interview with Zane Lowe, Matt Healy announced they have two new albums on the way. TWO!
Maroon 5 – ‘’Girls Like You (Remix)’ (Ft. Cardi B)
Adam Levine really pulls out an all-star cast on this one – with cameos from Camila Cabello, Gal Gadot, Tiffany Haddish, Sarah Silverman, Millie Bobby Brown and Ellen DeGeneres. WHOY. If that’s not enough Cardi B features and has a verse on this track too.
Gorillaz – ‘Humility’ (Ft. George Benson)
Gorillaz recruit living jazz and soul legend George Benson for help on their new track. The cut has a rather sunny vibe that shines through the melancholic Gorillaz vibe, which Benson’s instrumentation no doubt helps contribute to. Damon Albarn has said that, unlike the previous album Humanz, this new LP will only have two collaborators – the other being Snoop Dogg.
Drake – ‘I’m Upset’
Drizzy came out with this new single, which given the scorpion artwork, seems to be somehow related to his soon coming next album Scorpion. We can’t lie, the timing is unfortunate as only a few days later Pusha T had the internet go wild with his diss track ‘Story of Adidon’… which probably did leave Drake rather upset…
Charli XCX – ‘5 In The Morning’
Charli XCX gets trap-y on her new song, that comes off as a slower banger to play towards the end of a night. “Won't you stick around for the come down?’. This track follows her Pop 2 mixtape that she released last December.
Rex Orange County & Randy Newman – ‘You’ve Got a Friend in Me’
You've Got a Friend in Me
The. Toy. Story. Theme. Not only covered by Rex Orange County, but is also a duet with the original artist behind the track – Randy Newman. This is such an unexpected treat, and it works so perfectly. Very, very wholesome.
The Internet – ‘Come Over’
The second track off their new soon to come LP Hive Mind, the alternative R&B group (which originally existed as a splinter project from Odd Future) don’t disappoint. Syd tha Kyd, Steve Lacy and the rest of the group come through with some slightly more subdued and soulful vibes compared to their very dance-y previous track ‘Roll (Burbank Funk)’. Also - daaayuum that beat switch up at the end. Can’t wait to see where the whole album goes!
James Arthur – ‘At My Weakest/You Deserve Better’
X-Factor ninth series winner James Arthur comes back with two new tracks – one funky and one more heartfelt and emotional.
Mahalia – ‘I Wish I Missed My Ex’
English singer-songwriter Mahalia comes through with a real passionate jam. The call and response of the track is so infectious, it’s so soulful and it’s a real vibe. Defo don’t sleep on this one.
MNEK – ‘Colour’ (Ft. Hailee Seinfeld)
MNEK shows of his vocal abilities on this anthem of a track ‘Colour’. It’s got a bubbly, pop-y hook to it too, expect this to be a 2018 summer banger.
AJ Tracey & Not3s – ‘Butterflies’
Aj Tracey and Not3s come through with a downbeat banger. It’s a chill track that’ll have you nodding along for sure – not too intense but not too melancholic.
That's all for this week!
