MTV Review: The 1975’s New Record Is Everything We Dreamed Of & More

The boys are back, and better than ever…

The 1975’s ‘difficult second record’has been surrounded byanticipation from fans and critics alike, but has it lived up to the hype?

Their debut was ground breaking for what are technically a ‘boy band’ as they smashed onto the scene with music as big as frontman Matt Healy’s opinions - we knew they would be here to stay.

Following the self-titled'The 1975' was always going to be a tough one, but with 'I Like It When You Sleep, For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware Of It' (and breath), they’ve taken their signature sound and includedlots more interesting ideas and genres.

Singles ‘Love Me’ and ‘The Sound’ are both insanely catchy ear-worms and perfectly demonstrate the band’s intriguing moves to a more early 80s influence.

The 17-track monster of a record is long, but beautifully so. With stretching instrumental segments breaking up the tracks, Matt Healy and co. take the listener on a journey.

From the huskiness of ‘UGH!’ right through to the smoothness of ‘If I Believe You’, the record is varied, yet all the tracks are painted with the same brush.

In general, this record is more complex and multi-layered than their debut, a listener looking for 17 top ten singles won’t find what they’re looking for, however, they will find something more meaningful.

Although this record wins the award for most pretentious album title of all time, the contents are seriously good. If you do one thing this weekend, listen to this record, you won’t be disappointed.
