The Amazing Spider-Man Tops The UK Box Office

Superhero movie pummels the opposition in cinema ticket sales...

The Amazing Spider-Man has leapt to the top of the UK box office on its debut weekend, taking a whopping £11m in ticket sales.

And the superhero reboot movie's take, which includes preview sales from last Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, gives it the second-biggest opening weekend of the year so far.

Only another Marvel comic book adaptation, the Avengers movie, surpassed it - with a staggering £15.78m.

The new Spidey film features British actor Andrew Garfield as the young webslinger and Emma Stone as his love interest Gwen Stacy.

It outsold its nearest competition, Ice Age 4: Continental Drift, by a factor of 11 - with that film taking just £719k.

The Five-Year Engagement was at No 3 in the box office with just over £500k, while Katy Perry's Part Of Me took around £450k at No 4.

The movie also topped the box office in the US at the weekend.
