The Chainsmokers Talk Making Out With Halsey And Kanye West Induced Stage Fright
Check out our video interview with the American DJs here...
Breaking through in 2014 with novelty single ‘#SELFIE’, The Chainsmokers have since moved onto new ground. (They don’t make novelty songs anymore.)
Their single ‘Closer’, featuring Halsey, is one of 2016’s most successful tracks. After spending four weeks atop the UK Singles Chart earlier this year, ‘Closer’ is currently on an incredible 11-week run at the top of Billboard’s Hot 100 over in the US.
Despite not being able to use their human arms, as our colleagues over in the soon-to-be-nuclear-wasteland-following-the-election noted, The Chainsmokers clearly know how to make catchy, club-ready, dance floor-filling mass-appeal bangers.
With storytelling from two opposite points of view, a huge sing-along chorus and a distorted electronic hook proving a second section to sing-along to, ‘Closer’ is unquestionably, whether you’re a fan or not, an earworm. ‘Closer’ knows how to get inside of your head. For more on that, Slate published some really great analysis on exactly why that is.
MTV met up with The Chainsmokers - DJs Andrew (Drew) Taggart and Alex Pall – to talk about the track. “Adding her [Halsey] to the track really makes the song a conversation about two people that involved in a relationship,” Drew told us, before Alex jumps in to add “…they make out a lot.”
If you were on Planet Earth earlier this year, you probably heard that we put on this VMAs thing. The Chainsmokers performed with Halsey (more on that here). But what was that actually like for the duo?
“When you’re performing on stage – at anytime - it’s always really wild,” Drew said. “But when you’re performing in front of a bunch of people you respect, that’s when I get intimidated…but people are here to hear your song! So don’t freak out…even if Kanye West is going to be there.”
