Girls on Top in NME Coolest Chart
The music mag announces the 50 hippest dudes in music...
A girl who grew up in a town which banned MTV has topped NME magazine's 2006 Cool List.
Beth Ditto, lead singer with The Gossip, grew up in bible belt Arkansas in America, but is making a splash over here with her band's funky punk sound.
The curvaceous front woman, who is as far away from your plastic, manufactured pop princesses as you can imagine, beamed, "Anything that's not cool is cool."
And the rest of the top ten was split evenly between girls and boys. Motor-mouth style queen Lily Allen was a new entry at No 3; the perenially cool Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman Karen O bagged the No 5 spot while Long Blondes lass Kate Jackson bagged No 7 and Lovefoxx, from cooler-than-cool Brazilian disco act CSS, bagged spot 10.
Farris from The Horrors, Jarvis Cocker, Kieren from The View, MCR's Gerard Way and Thom Yorke snuggled into the remaining spaces.
