The Hunger Games Sequel Tops UK Box Office

Catching Fire sets cinemas alight as it becomes Lionsgate's biggest opener...

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire has blazed its way to the top of the UK box office on its first weekend of release.
The movie sequel - which stars Jennifer Lawrence,Liam HemsworthandJosh Hutcherson- took more than £12m in ticket sales and instantly became Lionsgate's biggest ever opening.
This means it exceeded the openings of the previous movie and the Twilight films. It actually took two-and-a-half times the amount of money that the first Hunger Games film did.
Lionsgate UK CEO Zygi Kamasa commented: "We are thrilled with the outstanding box office and audience response... Katniss and the world of Panem has struck a chord with UK audiences and critics alike with results to substantiate that.
"We are looking forward to seeing where Mockingjay will take us next."
The film also performed strongly in the US - with $161.1m on its opening weekend.
Sesame Street last week [uuid=3a7e60e0-4106-4268-965d-e60c214fcfcd]released a timely spoof[/uuid] of the franchise with Cookie Monster in J-Law's role.
