Maria Fowler Opens Up About Suicide Attempt
Reality star is recovering from an overdose of pills...
The Only Way Is Essex star Maria Fowler has spoken for the first time since admitting she had attempted suicide.
The reality star took an overdose of pills and spent three nights in hospital as a result. Now on the road to recovery, Maria has revealed: "I just wanted to escape."
In an interview with the Sunday People, Fowler said: "I felt so desperate. I didn't want to die but I didn't want to live. I felt like a caged animal. It was a cry for help - I didn't have anyone to turn to."
Luckily Maria texted friends, one of whom called an ambulance for the reality star.
Fowler was axed from TOWIE after it was alleged that she had worked as a high-class escort, and it was then that she became depressed.
She explained: "From the moment those allegations came out my whole life changed.
"Before I was pretty happy, really enjoying my time on TOWIE and I had a great life. But afterwards everything got quite dark. I felt constantly anxious, as if there was a hand round my throat."
Maria later moved to Peterborough with boyfriend James Morgan, but began to feel isolated from friends and family - and after an argument with the ice hockey player, she stormed out and swallowed pills in a bid to end her life.
Though she is now recovering from the overdose, Maria says she regrets her actions, and believes there should be more support for people suffering with depression.
She added: "There's nothing glamorous about trying to kill yourself. It's been the worst time of my life.
