TheBen Affleck-directed 1980 siege drama is the first film to scoop the top prize atThe Oscars without also having a nomination for its director since 1990.

It beat Lincoln, Les Miserables, Life of Pi, Django Unchained, Silver Linings Playbook, Amour, Beasts Of The Southern Wild and Zero Dark Thirty to take the gong.
Accepting the award, an emotional Affleck said: "I was here 15 years ago, and I had no idea what I was doing.
"I went out, you know, and I never thought I would be back here, but I am because of so many... wonderful people who extended themselves to me when I had no benefit for them in Hollywood.
"You have to work harder than you possibly can, you can't hold grudges and it doesn't matter how you get knocked down in life - all that matters is you've gotta get up."
Affleck previously won a screenwriting Oscar for Good Will Hunting along with Matt Damon in 1998.

The night also saw Daniel Day-Lewis make Oscars history with a third Best Actor award.
