The Simpsons Movie Sequel May Never Happen
We sat down with the producer of the show to talk Season 17 DVD release, a movie sequel and more...
We love The Simpsons. You love The Simpsons. Your mum probably loves The Simpsons. Everyone loves The Simpsons.
So we were rather excited to chat to the show's Executive Producer Al Jean ahead of the Season 17 DVD release to chat movie sequels, star-studded cameos and the secrets behind the show's success.
The first order of the day? Discussion of when/if a sequel to 2007's awesome feature film is on the cards. And according to Jean, there are currently ‘no plans’ for another movie, though the possibility isn’t written off. The team are keen to avoid an unnecessary sequel: “We got away with one, so why do another? Look at Sex & The City 2. Why are they doing this? You want to avoid one of those.” You can't really argue with that now, can you?
The Season 17 DVD also boasts a host of audio commentaries from, amongst others, Ricky Gervais and Kelsey Grammar (aka Sideshow Bob and Seattle’s favourite shrink, Frasier). Gervais is described by Jean as a ‘friend of the show’ and is someone that he would definitely line up were there ever to be a Simpsons live show in London (akin to the three nights at the Hollywood Bowl earlier this year, live shows which constituted cast and stars delivering musical numbers from the show live, accompanied by a full band).
When pressed Jean conceded that other names he would likely call upon would be no less than Harry Potter himself Daniel Radcliffe and comedy legend Steve Coogan. Radcliffe revealed himself to be a huge fan of the show, telling Jean that besides having seen every episode he also listened to ‘all the DVD commentaries’. One person not to appear for a different reason is Donald Trump, simply because “He’s too obnoxious. For sure he wants to be on the show, so we’re never going to ask.”
What will always work out though seems to be the show itself. Now into it’s 26th Season, it shows no sign of slowing. Jean sums it up nicely when he says “It’ll outlive me. There’s never been an animated property as successful as the Simpsons that people haven’t tried to bring back – they’re still making Mickey Mouse. I think they’re here to stay.”
We certainly hope so.
The Simpsons Season 17 is available now on Blu-ray and DVD.
