The Summer Set: "The UK Inspires Us"
New music? Tour disasters? Dressing like Ron Burgundy? Brian and Jess tell us everything
Backstage on the last day of Hit The Deck festival, MTV UK caught up with the always enthusiastic Brian Logan Dales and Jess Bowen, lead singer and drummer of The Summer Set, to find out when we can expect new music from the ‘Legendary’ Arizona pop-rockers, their plans for Warped Tour 2014 and whether Brian ever takes off his signature red jacket.
MTV UK: Hey guys! Can you sum up your experiences of playing these intense, one-day festival shows for Hit The Deck 2014?
Brian Logan Dales: It’s chaos. Good chaos, we’ve been here in the UK doing a headlining tour, doing our own shows, playing for an hour and a half, so doing this is crazy. On stage we were going wild - we set up on the fly, play for fifteen minutes and then it’s all over!
Jess Bowen: It’s overwhelming but at the same time you’re having fun. It’s just entirely different to our normal daily routine…
MTV UK: You are heading out for your third Warped Tour this year, which runs for three and a half months over the summer – what have you learnt to expect from your previous Warped Tours?
Brian: Don’t expect to be able to communicate with anyone outside of Warped tour. Cell phones don’t work, Internet doesn’t work.
Jess: Warped Tour is just like this camp where you can’t get out. I’m very excited. We’re playing main stage this year and I’m really excited for the shows. I feel like we worked really hard and earned that. There are a lot of our friends on Warped Tour too, which is awesome.
MTV UK: You are doing Band Happy workshops while you are on Warped, teaching kids about touring. What’s your worst ever tour disaster?
Brian: I fell off stage and broke my ankle once. That was pretty rough. I still have the plaster cast.
Jess: We had a trailer that we didn’t know how to drive that well and one time we got stuck down a one-way street and had to have a stranger help us. That stranger turned out to be Gavin DeGraw.
MTV UK: Actual Gavin DeGraw, famous for the One Tree Hill theme song?!
Brian: Actual Gavin DeGraw. We played the Macy’s Parade with him last year, which was so funny!
MTV UK: Ok, very serious question now. Brian, will the red jacket be going on tour with you?
Brian: Of course. I don’t go anywhere without it.
MTV UK: We see you wearing it A LOT on stage. Do you have lots of copies of the same jacket, like Ron Burgundy and his iconic suits?
Brian: Just the one. I have lots of jackets from this one Japanese company, including that red one. I wanted a bright one!
MTV UK: Jess, we loved your drum cover of Bastille’s ‘Pompeii’ that you posted on YouTube. Are you planning to do more covers?
Jess: I’m planning to! I’m just trying to find the time. That first one was so spur of the moment, we had some extra time before sound check, and our tour manager gave me a GoPro and said “here you go, record a song” so I did.
MTV UK: We are still loving your album ‘Legendary’, even though it’s been out for a year, it’s going to soundtrack our summer again.
Brian: We are called The Summer Set, after all. It’s all about the perpetual summer album for us.
MTV UK: We’ve seen some Instagram shots of you in the studio, will fans get to hear new music from you any time soon?
Brian: Our touring schedule is crazy for the next few months, then in September everyone Jess and I know is getting married so we’ll be busy watching them get married, but we’ve definitely written a lot of songs on the road over the past year and a half. A lot of songs are getting written mindlessly, so who knows if they will ever see the light of day!
MTV UK: Is anything particularly inspiring you while you are out on the road?
Brian: I’m going to remember this trip to the UK for VERY interesting reasons – but that’s all I’m going to say about that. Those reasons are going to inspire me to create and be inspired by a very powerful time. A lot of songs are going to come out of this trip to the UK…
