5 Minutes With… Context
The Wrap Up: Talk to us about your latest EP, ‘Stealing My Older Brother's Tapes’.
Context: Each track is a reworking of an early 90's track which I can remember growing up. So there are reworking’s of Altern8, Goldie, Underworld and The Prodigy. There's a few different vibes on there - mellow hip hop, house and ‘bass’… whatever that is! Because it’s a free release, it was just a chance for me to experiment with sounds.
TWU: How does your older brother feel about having his tapes stolen?
Context: I’m sure he's over it now, it was about 20 years ago [laughs]. The one tape I remember taking from his room more than any other was this nutty old hardcore tape called 'Kaos Theory 2' - that was the tape which had the Altern8 track which I've sampled on the current EP. I actually first heard the Goldie track on a drum & bass mixtape which I took from my older sister's room – ‘Stealing My Older Sibling's Tapes’ didn’t have the same ring to it though!
TWU: Who is your favourite female artist right now?
Context: Jhene Aiko.
TWU: Who is your favourite male artist right now?
Context: French Montana. Let’s be honest, the guy is a truly abysmal rapper. Dangerously poor. But whack his stuff on in the motor and it does the job for me.
TWU: If you could collaborate with anyone right now, who would it be?
Context: London Grammar on some dreamscape type track.
TWU: What genre most inspires you right now?
Context: I'm actually back into rap music. I go in phases where I feel like it’s all trash, but then certain artists or tracks stick with me and get me going again.
TWU: What was the last album you listened to?
Context: You know what, probably Drake's album ‘Nothing Was the Same’.
TWU: Tell us one of your career highlights.
Context: Working with Mike Skinner last year was pretty sick. We used to listen to The Streets in my mates house, and then I just randomly turned up at his door with Mike and we filmed the scene where we were sitting playing Xbox. He was styling it out, trying to be casual, but was definitely gassed that Mike was in his gaff! Plus signing to EMI last year was massive for me.
TWU: Where’s been your favourite place to perform?
Context: Wireless Festival was mental.
TWU: What’s your favourite lyric of all time?
Context: A lyric from ‘Trust’ by Nas - ‘It's rare I listen to those who never been in my position/A caterpillar can't relate to what an eagle envisions.’
TWU: What’s your poison?
Context: A pint of Fozzy.
TWU: If MTV could cook you dinner, anything you want, what would you like?
Context: Mate, anything cooked at home would be quality. In the last three years I've had food cooked at home less than 15 times. Maybe a roast?
TWU: I'm down. Blondes or brunettes?
TWU: How would your ideal Friday night go?
Context: It would probably involve things that shouldn't be shared with a reputable outlet such as yourselves [laughs]. Short version: meet my mates, nice dinner, pub, bar, rave, back to the flat, look at the clock and feel terrified at the time, crawl into bed. Nice.
TWU: What do you hope to achieve this year?
Context: Get signed, get a flat, and get an Audi A5. The holy trinity [laughs]! Nah, my goal every year is to end the year proud of what I've achieved in the previous 12 months, and to be genuinely excited about the next 12 months. If you don't feel like that, you've got to change it up really.
