5 Minutes With... Jackie Boyz
When Grammy Award winning US producers and songwriters the Jackie Boyz touched down in the UK, The Wrap Up's James Walsh was on hand inbetween their studio sessions to get a quick five minutes with them. Signed under Universal, brothers Carlos and Steven Battey are originally from Georgia and cite ‘Sam Cooke, The Temptations and Boyz II Men’ as ‘classic soul legends that we love’…
With these influences in mind, it is perhaps no surprise that they refer to their music as ‘progressive soul’, describing it as ‘a mixture of soul from the past and the modern sounds of today found in EDM and garage music’.
Having produced such recognizable hits including Flo Rida's 'Sugar', Chris Brown's 'Graffiti' and Sean Kingston and Justin Bieber's 'Eenie Meenie', they explain the creative process begins ‘with a guitar and singing melodies, closely followed by the lyrics right after’.
Moving from Georgia to LA in 2009 helped kickstart their upward spiral and in 2011 they won their first Grammy for 'Best Remixed Recording, Non Classical' for their contribution to the One Love Club Mix of Madonna's 'Revolver'.
Winning the prestigious award "felt unreal! We were on a freeway when we found out we won the Grammy and almost wrecked the car’. [Laughs]
‘While everyone we have worked with was very creative, Madonna has a special place in our hearts as she's a legend and knows what kind of artist she is and where she wants to go.’ However, the song they're most proud of is Justin Bieber's 'Down To Earth'.
‘It was a song I wrote for my daughter and to watch it come to life was very inspiring. It’s my daughters favourite song so it gives me this proud feeling.’
As well as top line production and songwriting credits, The Jackie Boyz have also released two albums in Japan, 2009's 'Love & Beyond' and 2011's 'Songs in My Blackberry' which ‘both did extremely well. We sold over 25,000 independently and had a great tour there’.
Following this up with the release of '585 Dayz Later' in their native US they also have ‘a BIG record with DJ Sammy called 'Shut Up and Kiss Me' and are currently working with ‘Little Nikki and Elyar Fox in the UK’ as well as putting the finishing touches to their UK album.
Confirming they'll ‘definitely be spending more time in the UK collaborating with great artists’ their goal for the next few years is ‘spreading this progressive soul sound to the masses. Building with our production team APEX and Touring with our band The XYZ Boyz. This will be a very eventful future to come!’
