5 Minutes With Shystie
The Wrap Up: It’s been great to hear new music from you! What was the thought process when making ‘Stop’?
Shystie: Thank you! I just wanted to go in a new direction and explained to the team what kind. Then DeanyBoy came up with this dance/90s/breakbeat vibe, which I loved. I want to do feel-good music and there wasn't a lane over here where you have that sound with a female rapping over it. So I wanted to be the first and make this my thing.
TWU: Your debut album ‘Diamond In The Dirt’ was released 10 years ago and fans would love another one - when do you reckon they can expect it?
Shystie: When it feels right, and it's starting to get there. But first and most importantly I have to build on a stronger radio and TV presence along with momentum. Once these things are in place then I'll be in album mode - so right now that's what I'm working towards.
TWU: After a decade, your next album is bound to be different from ‘Diamond In The Dirt’ - how do you think it will differ?
Shystie: I've grown a lot since then. My musical influences have changed and my mentality has changed so it will be my new perspective on life and experiences along with new sounds that I'm into.
TWU: What are the three biggest lessons you’ve learnt over the past decade?
Shystie: Patience… Consistency is majorly important. And they all love you when you’re hot, but when you're not they're gone and don't want to help. [Laughs] funny people in this game.
TWU: Tell us one thing people may not know about you.
Shystie: I'm born on Christmas Day!
TWU: What really grinds your gears?
Shystie: People who talk with food in their mouth and eat with their mouth open…
TWU: If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be and why?
Shystie: Rihanna, just because she's my babes [laughs]. She's a great business woman, always delivers and I just love her 'don't give a s**t' attitude.
TWU: If you could have dinner with any three people, dead or alive, who would be sitting at the table?
Shystie: Rihanna, Ben Stiller and Robert Downey Jr.
TWU: What’s your favourite lyric of all time?
Shystie: 'It was all a dream!' (from Notorious B.I.G’s ‘Juicy’)
TWU: If you could only deliver one message to the world, what would it be?
Shystie: Be kind and spread good vibes and energies.
