5 Minutes With Sky Heavens
We get to know the Brooklyn-bred singer...
The Wrap Up: Talk to us about your latest track ‘Hear Me Cry’ and what it’s inspired by.
Sky Heavens: It's inspired by my everyday trials with love and self-love. I was just playing around the house one day and freestyled a verse and hook, and the melodies to the pace of the track was painted clearly in my head. I heard it starting off slow and passionate, as it flowed, the intensity rises and then gets chaotic once it has reached it's climax. ‘Hear Me Cry’ is the form of release, letting go and finding that inner light.
TWU: How does being from Brooklyn inspire your sound?
Sky: I would say the authenticity and the grittiness. I was born and raised in Brooklyn with my parents, so I will forever cherish those memories and rep my hometown.
TWU: When will we be able to hear your EP ‘Luz’ and what can we expect from it?
Sky: I'm working on adding final touches and looking forward to releasing it soon. This past year has been one of huge changes for me and everything in this EP is about all of these transformative experiences.
TWU: How did you pick the stage name Sky Heavens?
Sky: My dad always called me Sky and Heavens was a name I loved and said I would name my child. I spontaneously made that my URL name when MySpace first came out and was not able to change it so it was stuck with me [laughs]. Sky and Heavens symbolizes life, change, growth and looking up to my higher power God for guidance, so its fits me perfectly. There's no such thing as coincidence.
TWU: You’ve toured with Eminem as his lead vocalist – what’s been the greatest part of the experience?
Sky: Just taking everything in, living in the moment and growing - it’s been a surreal experience and I'm so humbled and grateful for it all.
TWU: What was your favourite thing about London?
Sky: I love the music and fashion world there. As soon as I touch down in london I'm ready to go shopping! I know, so cliche... I'm guilty [laughs].
TWU: Have you got to hear any British music and if so, who are you feeling?
Sky: Yes, I love Sam Smith!
TWU: What was the last album you listened to?
Sky: Sia. I absolutely adore her voice, her arrangements and her writing - she's super talented.
TWU: Who are your favourite artists of the moment?
Sky: Sia, Kendrick Lamar, Bruno Mars and Aloe Blacc.
TWU: Who would be your MCM and WCW?
Sky: Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and super model Joan Smalls!
TWU: What is your favourite lyric of all time?
Sky: Nas - ‘My first album had no famous guest appearances/the outcome, i'm crowned the best lyricist.’ We live in a super-saturated world where everything is about name brands, but he beat the odds on his own and that’s inspiring.
TWU: If you could invite four people - dead or alive - to dinner, who would they be?
Sky: My parents whom are both deceased and a separate dinner with Tupac and Prince. But I may not ever wanna leave that dinner with my parents.
TWU: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received?
Sky: Quit worrying about how everything is going to turn out. Live one day at a time and make the most of this moment. If you're always living in the future, you will never really enjoy the present.
TWU: Let’s fast forward to August 2015 - talk us through all of the things you would have liked to achieved.
Sky: I want to tour and travel more and perform my own shows. I’d like to do motivational speaking, establish my not-for-profit S.H.E., publish and release my first book and continue to follow and allow God to guide me.
