The Wrap Up: Hi Ny! So, you’re currently on tour with N-Dubz. How is that all going?
Ny: Yeah, it’s amazing! There’s a really good vibe and it’s a lot of fun, late nights and great performances.
TWU: What’s in your rider?
Ny: Fruit, crisps, a bottle of wine, lemons, honey and a kettle!
TWU: Quite early on in your career, you had a lot of support being around the likes of Ms Dynamite, Wiley, Pro Green, Plan B and others. What has observing them in action taught you about the music industry?
Ny: Just to always be yourself, be as unique as possible and once you’re comfortable with yourself and your sound, keep pushing it and not to be influenced too much by other people's decisions.
TWU: What was it that made you sit down and write your first song and when did you realise that you wanted a career in music?
Ny: I started songs writing from poetry first, and the poetry was just an emotional outlet. Most of us as teenagers, the world feels like it’s on our shoulders, so I used the poetry as a therapy then that turned into writing songs. I wanted to do it as a career when I was around 15, when I started working for Bigga Fish and I saw people like Ms Dynamite performing. I just thought, ‘Yep! I need to do this, I love it.'
TWU: Name a song that you wish you could have made and why…
Ny: Adele’s 'Someone Like You'. I can definitely relate to it and I think it’s written so cleverly, battling with love and your own ego. It’s an honest song.
TWU: Working your way up the ladder of success all on your own must've been hard, we expected you to have a few wrinkles by now (laughs). What’s your secret?
Ny: (Laughs) It’s been difficult, but it’s probably a mixture of being a veggie, all the Quorn, soya, fruit and salad. I drink a lot of water as well.
TWU: You've been on tour across America, opened for Fatboy Slim at Glastonbury, as well as being playlisted on BBC 1Xtra, so what else is there left for you to achieve?
Ny: It’s only just started! I’d love to be able to have my own tour and to perform on some more stages, you can never perform enough. I love travelling as well, so I’d love to go back to America and gig at bigger venues.
TWU: After years on the grind, you've finally managed to find time to pen your debut album. What is sounding like? Are you happy with it?
Ny: It’s my sound. I’ve spent a lot of time doing mixtapes and features to get comfortable with my own voice, my own lyrics and my own sound. It’s a fusion of everything that I'm influenced by, like reggae and soul – but it's still very UK. UK music is very strong and it’s got a very fresh, honest and open vibe to it.
TWU: The new video for your latest single, ‘Be With You’, was filmed in Sugarhut – which is the club owned by The Only Way Is Essex’s Kirk. Please explain…
Ny: In the video I wanted to have a contrast of the two guys I was torn between. Giggs had the bad boy image and I chose Kirk because he’s quite clean-cut and very sweet.
TWU: What are your hopes as an artist? Where do you want to see yourself in a few years’ time?
Ny: My aim is to become a legend, so whatever needs to be done to become a legend, then that’s what I will do!
TWU: We know that you've been on the scene for many years now, but for those who might be new to your music, how would you describe Ny?
Ny: It’s a shot of reality with a squeeze of vibes, a pinch of energy, freshness and infectiousness.
Ny’s new single, 'Be With You', is out on May 22.
