A Quick Catch-Up With: Rd
We caught up with the fresh-faced RD last year, just before they were about to take on the urban music world. With their single, 'Got Me Burnin', set to heat things up a little, The Wrap Up’s Leanne Joseph sat down with the girl group for a quick catch-up, where they talk about fashion, touring with N-Dubz, erm, Olly Murs, and much more...
The Wrap Up: Hi ladies! We know you’ve been really busy making new videos, performing and releasing new material. How are you lot coping with your schedule?
Troy: Our schedule has been hectic! We did know that these times were going to come but we didn’t expect it to be so crazy. Yesterday, we were at the studio and we didn’t leave the studio till 3am in the morning and now we’re here. You never know what’s going to happen, but a lot of its all fun.
TWU: We hear Katy B wrote your new single, ‘Got Me Burnin’, which is causing quite a stir. Tell us about that...
Troy: Its weird, because I’ve known Katy B for years – we went to school together we’re really good friends. I’ve always supported Katy with her music and I know she probably never expected me to take music so seriously, but I am now. We didn’t know we were going to be working with each other to begin with, but I’m glad we did because it took me back to school times. It was fun, we made the song jazzy and it has a real salsa sound to it, so we hope people can buy into it and enjoy it because it’s a proper club track.
TWU: You also recently done a track with Sneakbo, right? We didn’t see a video, so what happened to that?
Chronz: We might just bring it out again because I don’t think it got the love it deserved. We put out ‘Got Me Burnin’ at the same time, so it kind of clashed. Also, Sneakbo – who is also very busy – has got a lot of heat around his name and the timing is not right to get both of us where we’re all free to do it, so we’ve got to make sure the timings right for it. But I think a video would be sick!
TWU: You guys are bringing a very different look to the scene. Does your unique fashion sense play a big part in RD are about?
Marika: Yeah, because you don’t want to blend in. I think that’s the thing with us, we like being distinctive. We want people to go, ‘That’s RD!’ We want young girls, our age or younger, to be like, ‘That’s what I want to wear, what them girls are wearing’ or ‘I want to be in RD!’ That’s what we want them to feel like. The normal girl in the street, they’re not going to walk around in dresses and hells with Dior and Gucci bags – we’re just keeping it real. We’re going to Primark and H&M.
TWU: So, any plans of a fashion line down the line?
Marika: Yes! Totally.
Troy: I think we’d kill it!
Chronz: The whole eyelash line, the perfume line...
Troy: The whole weave line (laughs). We should just open a shop called ‘RD Essentials’.
Marika: As big as Selfridges, watch! (Laughs)
TWU: Do you feel pressure to look a certain way because young girls are looking up to you?
Chronz: For me, as long as I feel comfortable, I’m cool. I don’t watch my calories, I don’t watch none of that, I’m just me. I haven’t really changed my diet or anything like that. I think the media put a lot of pressure on you to look good, but I’m not really phased by it.
Marika: If you keep it real from the beginning, then they won’t have anything to say. If you try and be something that you’re not from the beginning, then later on you’re like, ‘I can’t be bothered’, and they see you in a tracksuit – they’re going to grill you!
TWU: You’ve worked with some of the best people in the industry, but who would you say has given you the best advice on how to survive in the industry?
Troy: Recently, we worked with Fazer in the studio.
Chronz: He’s so talented! He does all the N-Dubz beats. He’s working with Mr Hudson at the moment. What he was playing us, we were like, ‘You made that?’ Obviously, we know N-Dubz and they have a particular sound, but he played us some indie beats, some rock beats and some hip-hop, which shocked us. He’s very versatile, he can write and he can sing.
TWU: Who would you say has been the most fun person you’ve met and spent time with?
Marika: Olly Murs. He’s one person that I will never forget. The first day we meet him, we were at our management party. One minute he was talking to us, the next minute, he was running to catch some free chicken!
Chronz: It was advertised as a barbeque, so no one ate.
TWU: Were you expecting burgers and hotdogs?
Troy: It was just alcohol everywhere and little nibbles.
Marika: But yeah, he was a character. Very funny!
TWU: That’s so random! Does this craziness continue on tour?
Marika: We have a blast on tour.
Troy: Hotels and stuff, we live it up! There was one time when we were doing the MOBO tours and myself and Marika had to share a big room in the hotel and Mz Bratt, Selah and Chronz all getting ready to go out raving. We spent the whole night out, then we came back and there were four of us all in one little bed.
Marika: Mz Bratt’s feet in my face (laughs).
Troy: Her and Bratt giggling, and me and Selah getting upset. Annoying the workers in the hotel. It’s crazy, though, we have fun on tour.
Marika: We even play ‘Knock Down Ginger’ on the hotel rooms (laughs).
TWU: The day in the life of being in a girl group, eh? (Laughs)
