Afro District: The Year Of Rush
Nigerian based singer/songwriter Rush is set to make a mark in the Afrobeat scene this year...
What a year the Afrobeat scene has had, 2016 was definitely a year that gave us an insight into what we should be looking forward to seeing in 2017. The genre has elevated and influenced many artists resulting in a number 1 for Africa’s very own Wizkid alongside Drake with ‘One Dance’, in addition to that after 7 years of not being in London, Burna Boy came back with a homecoming concert that can only be described as a movie that would have people talking till today. Lastly how we can forget how in 2016 we saw and heard consecutive hits from Mr. Eazi, tracks like ‘Bankulize', ‘Skin Tight, ‘Ohemaa’ and ‘Leg Over’ taking over the airwaves internationally.
Nigerian based singer/songwriter Rush is set to make a mark in the Afrobeat scene this year, with his debut single ‘Attention’. Developing his artistry from a young age, Rush has performed all over Nigeria including the famous Felabration (a celebration of Fela Kuti’s life) at the legendary New African shrine. He made his debut performance in early 2016 at ‘Wakaa, The Musical’, so you know he is not a stranger to the stage.
Rush caught the attention of Afro District at a private event that he performed at, from the moment he stepped on stage he commanded the attention of everybody in the room, with his energy, style, and charisma, bringing the elements of Nigeria to the platform. He left a good impression on the crowd. His musical style is a mix between the great King Sunny Ade, Sound Sultan and 2 Face Idibia, this alone shows you that greatness is something he is destined for.
Just witnessing an artist on the rise with such versatility and panache about him sets him aside from the rest. As a vocalist, he showed that he was not afraid to express his musical creativity and be a true representation of where he is from. African music in the clubs will no longer be a thing of the past, and we can definitely see Rush single ‘Attention’ being a part of every DJ’s selection.
Personally, I feel that this young artist Rush has a good year ahead of him, having already shot the video for his first single 'Attention' to put out his first project, I foresee him creating more hits, working alongside the heavyweights in the game and marking his territory in the Afrobeat scene in Nigeria and the UK.
