Alternative Sound Selection
Welcome to the month of May boys and girls; one more month and we’ll already be halfway through 2013! The music this year has been nothing short of exquisite and over the next few minutes, I will be sharing with you some of the very best new alternative British urban music from the past few weeks…
British Nigerian singer, songwriter and producer Azekel is no stranger to the Alternative Sound Selection, and if he continues to make excellent music like this, he will become a firm fixture in this column - I will not be complaining. His latest release is inspired by a Sade classic of the same name, but Azekel’s ‘No Ordinary Love’ ventures into a territory that you seldom hear on record - the love between a father and son. Filled with frank and honest lyrics, Azekel’s soothing vocal delivery and production from Adelight, ‘No Ordinary Love’ is as resounding and brilliant as it gets.
Nottingham singer and songwriter Joel Baker returns to my column with the release of his beautiful new single titled ‘Further Than Feelings’, which is off of his forthcoming ‘Long Sleeves’ EP, which I personally cannot wait to hear. On ‘Further Than Feelings’, Baker doesn’t just shine lyrically, but his vocals are so warm, mellow and glorious - and the acoustic guitar arrangements on this record will blow you away.
Premiered a few days ago on Pigeons & Planes, 19-year old London singer and songwriter Kenzie May makes her solo debut with the excellent ‘Hide & Seek’ and is already drawing comparisons to AlunaGeorge and Ellie Goulding. Having previously been known for her exciting covers and featuring on Sub Focus’ 2011 hit single ‘Falling Down’, Kenzie May now takes center-stage on this hypnotic musical backdrop with her hauntingly captivating vocals and songwriting with pop sensibility.
‘Monday Morning Blues’ is the debut single from the refreshingly soulful Jerome Thomas and is a rather curious fusion of soul, jazz, drum & bass and reggae music. The track has already been getting support from BBC 1Xtra and several online tastemakers. The single is to be released on May 20 and is taken from the East London native’s forthcoming debut EP titled ‘The Quiet Before the Storm’. You can enjoy ‘Monday Morning Blues’ below.
This column wouldn't be complete if I didn't mention that 'Home', the debut album from Rudimental, is out now and it is one of the best British records of 2013 so far. You definitely need to get your hands on a copy of this record. This past week, the production quartet released the latest single from the album, ‘Baby’ featuring MNEK and Sinead Harnett and if you haven’t already heard this tune, do yourself a favour!
I cannot really talk about Rudimental this month without also talking about Disclosure because while Rudimental have one of the best albums out now, Disclosure have one of the best singles out right now! Featuring none other than Eliza Doolittle, 'You & Me' will feature on the sibling duo's forthcoming debut album ‘Settle’ which will also feature the likes of Jessie Ware and London Grammar. Check out 'You & Me' below.
