Artist To Watch: Azekel
Azekel brings his soulful brand of music to the fore...
There’s a refreshing brand of R&B being brought to the forefront and it comes in the form of the soulful singer Azekel.
Azekel is that what you would call a young talent with an old soul. Ask him where his inspiration draws from and he’ll take it way back, “It probably sounds cheesy but it was a re-run of Top Of The Pops 2. I had seen Little Richard. I just loved the way he performed.” He explains “It’s been a long journey from there. I’ve delved into so many other kinds of music and I’ve picked up other instruments in production and song writing, I’m finding my sound now.”
Reppin’ the creative hub known as East London, the singer has had many singles out over the past year, including ‘The Feeling’ and the Sade sampled ‘No Ordinary Love’ but it’s ‘New Romance’ that was his breakthrough “Hearing myself on BBC Radio 1 while at work, that was really something.” He says “I’ve had publications [reach out] as well. When I did ‘No Ordinary Love’ [Sade] cleared it, [which means] she liked the song so that was pretty cool.”
The singer made his main stage debut at the Appelsap Festival in Amsterdam this past summer, but of course he’s just getting started “I’m working on my EP and I’m looking forward to doing more shows around London.” Says the singer “I’m just working on perfecting my craft.” If you’re craving a sound that harkens back to the feel good days of D’Angelo with a bit of Prince and sprinkled with some London flair, Azekel is your go-to guy.
