Benga: 'i Want Chart Records'
Dubstep master Benga has been speaking about the scene that he has been in for over a decade, admitting that raving constantly can make you lose sense in reality: “I’ve gone a bit mental. When you see me on stage these days I look like an absolute lunatic because I don’t know how to behave properly anymore...”
The 25-year-old also spoke about the importance of taking a break, telling The Sun that it was best for his health: “If I just carried on partying constantly like we do on the road and never had that break that producing gives me, then I’d be dead. That’s why the biggest rock stars these days are producers. We spend all that time in the studio and then have that release on the road and go mental.”
Benga and Skream have been credited for initiating the genre of dubstep, but says he doesn’t want to dwell on what he accomplished in the past. He said: “Did Skream and Benga create dubstep or didn’t they? I don’t want to rest on that anymore. I want to do things on merit. It’s nice for people to pay reference to that and I’ve been doing this for a long time now. But it’s time for me to start showing people what I’m made of now.”
Talking about his latest album, Benga explained his goals: “This is my one chance to establish myself as not only a big producer from the scene but as a leader and someone who can truly innovate. I’ve done a lot of different things on this album. There are genuinely tracks that sound like nothing else out there.”
He then went on to say he was ready for mainstream success: “I want to be a pop star - I want chart records.”
