Behind The Scenes: Chase and Status, Bonkaz 'Wha Gwarn' Video Shoot
As Chase & Status reveal 'Wha Gwarn', their collaboration with Bonkaz and the third instalment from their ‘London Bars’ project, we can exclusively share some behind the scenes footage from the video shoot. We also had a chat with the guys and asked them some questions about what is without a doubt one of the most exciting collaborative projects of the year.
It’s been a couple of years since your last album ‘Brand New Machine’, so what made you decide to put this ‘London Bars’ project together?
Chase: Well we’re coming back at the beginning of 2016 with our fourth album, so we’ve just been making tunes across the whole year. To cut a long story short, these are the people we’re feeling right now - we’re loving these guys. For me, we’ve got some real stars of the future with the likes of Bonkaz, as well as some real kings with Frisco and Giggs. We’ve been fans of them all for a long time so it’s nice to finally hook up and do something.
What were your thoughts behind selecting the artists you wanted for this project?
Status: It’s just MC’s with feeling, that’s why we called it London Bars. It’s a nice project to do on our record label MTA too and was important for us to put some of our music out on our own label. We’re signed to Virgin Records as artists, but it was much more important for this project to come from an underground place and that’s what MTA represents, so it’s been a really nice fit.
Bonkaz, what were your thoughts when Chase & Status approached you about this track?
Bonkaz: I was gassed. It’s very early in my career so I’m at the stage of everything happening for my first time. Artists that I’ve been looking up to for a long time have been hollering me one but when my manager told me that Chase & Status wanted to do something I just thought it was sick. I’ve literally been listening to these guys for a very long time, so it’s all exciting for me.
Will the tracks we’ve heard on the London Bars project so far resemble the kind of sounds we can expect to hear on your forthcoming album?
Chase: Well we never like to give away exactly who’s on the album, but we’ve had a lot of sessions with a lot of people. Back in October, we hired out Metropolis for the whole month to really get cracking and we came out of there with about 40 songs, so it’s hard to tell you exactly what’s gonna be where, but watch this space.
Status: We’ve been fortunate that our albums have had a real mixture of different types of vocalists and artists that we’ve collaborated with and that’s been a really enjoyable part of what we’ve done. So there’s definitely going to be a big mixture of different people, but all amazing and a lot of new British talent as well.
With all this talk of a new Chase & Status album, when can we expect your full-length debut Bonkaz?
Bonkaz: It’ll likely be next year, but I don’t wanna rush it. My favourite album of all time is ‘A Grand Don’t Come For Free’ by The Streets and I want my album to be conceptual like that. It’s my first album so I’ve got my whole life to document in this one project and I’m gonna take my time with it. Even if it doesn’t come until 2017, I’m not gonna rush it.
