Diplo: 'being A Dj Is Pretty B******t...'
Super-producer Diplo recently graced the cover of the latest issue of VIBE alongside new rap blood Azealia Banks. The ‘Climax’ producer spoke about the ‘pretty bulls**t’ life of being a DJ, the spectacular money to be made from it and why it is so important to keep moving with the ever-evolving hip-hop scene…
The 33-year-old spoke about the difference between producing and DJing, saying that although he can “make more money in a weekend than my grandpa made in a year”, the DJ life is not particularly challenging.
The Major Lazer artist said: “Being a DJ is pretty bulls**t. I’m lucky I can produce records, too, because DJs don’t do s**t. They just f**king play records. Usher is trained to dance. Justin Bieber had to train 24 hours a day to be a performer. What I do is pretty simple. It’s a good time to be a DJ and make good money, but you definitely can’t have an ego doing this s**t because it’s not that cool.”
However, he took time out to give props to producer Skrillex, admitting: “But some people are good at what they do. Skrillex is a bonafide superstar.”
Diplo is not one to stay in the commercial box of the latest fads, as he explained that working with Riff Raff has prompted people to ask him why, saying “’that’s f**king terrible. That’s like the worst thing ever.’”
“My words to them is, when Schoolly D did ‘P.S.K.’ people were probably like, ‘What the f**k is this?’ Hip-hop always changes. And you know what, we’re old. [Kids] get it. Maybe you don’t get it. I can see where the appeal is. But if you can’t, that’s your fault. You’re kind of old, I guess. If you don’t like Lil B. Maybe he sucks at rapping or whatever, but if you don’t see his appeal, you’re kind of backwards.”
