Dr Dre Tops Forbes List As Highest-Earning Hip-Hop Artist
Dr Dre hit a goldmine when in 2006 when he decided to launch his own range of headphones. It started with Dre chatting to Interscope Chairman Jimmy Iovine about selling sneakers, when they spontaneously thought of selling speakers. After getting Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber and P. Diddy on board, the business was off to a flying start…
The headphones, which are worn by music lovers across the globe, made him a whopping $110 million last year alone. The business has been so consuming, it is the reason for his ‘Detox’ album being delayed. The Def Jam president told Forbes: “I understand why Dre didn’t finish ‘Detox’ - it’s called Beats.”
HTC even purchased a 51% stake in the headphones for a very cool $300 million. Due to the success of his ‘Beats’, the producer has now topped Forbes’ Cash Kings list this year, with his total riches amounting to around $250 million.
P. Diddy is number two on the list, having earned $45 million. Jay-Z follows at number three with $38 million whilst his buddy Kanye West is right behind him with $35 million. Young Money members then dominate the remainder of the list, with Lil Wayne, Drake, Birdman and Nicki Minaj respectively filling up spots five to eight. Eminem and Ludacris have claimed spots nine and ten.
