Ed Sheeran: From Sofa-Hopping To Success
Ed Sheeran recently spoke about the success he has seen over the past 12 months. He told The Sun: "Exactly a year ago, I signed my record deal. So 12 months later to have four nominations and a successful album and tour is fun. I'm really pleased..."
The singer swooped up more nominations than Adele for this year’s BRIT Awards, which raised some eyebrows. He said on the subject: "It is definitely still Adele's year. She's done everything and is the most successful UK artist for 20 years. She's going to sweep up all her awards."
When questioned on competiveness and jealousy in the UK music scene, he said it is actually quite the opposite: "There is no jealousy between British artists. We are all good friends. I lived with Rizzle Kicks for a while and Emeli Sandé supported me. I have history with pretty much everyone nominated."
He added: "I've known Jessie J for a couple of years. We did a gig together about a year and a half ago, at a place in Brick Lane, east London, to about 50 people. For us to be frontrunners at the BRITs is amazing. It's been nice to be on that rise with her."
Ed took a somewhat unconventional route into the music industry – trying to stay unsigned for as long as possible. He explained: "I wanted to do the independent thing for as long as I could. I did a lot of gigs and a lot of surfing round people's sofas. But it was all enjoyable and I got a lot of experience out of it.
“My goal was to independently chart and I did that. When I signed to Atlantic Records last year it wasn't for the money, I wanted the support. I got to the point where the fans wanted an album. The most important thing for an artist to remember is that they are nowhere without their fanbase. Mine are very loyal — they come to every show and they buy every bit of music."
He also revealed to the tabloid that he spent Christmas working on some new material with a famous US rapper – whose name is to be kept secret, for now: "I got home for Christmas and it was lovely to see my friends and family. Then I got the email from this rapper so I went. I get restless when I'm not creating."
