Fresh: Paigey Cakey – ‘The First Paige’ Ep
You may have seen Paigey Cakey in ‘Dam City’ or on Tim Westwood’s Crib Sessions alongside fellow femcee’s RoxXxan and friend Lady Leshurr. Real name Paige Meade, the 19-year-old from Hackney has now released her first EP, ‘The First Paige’, featuring Mz Bratt, Wiley and others…
As well as featuring on the BBC Introducing stage earlier in the year at BBC’s Hackney Weekend, the young Londoner has also demonstrated her acting skills, featuring in the 2011 film Attack The Block for one.
Paigey, who told The Wrap Up that her sound is ‘energetic and powerful’, said to us of her first EP: “It’s like the first page of my book. I’m not… well, I am a new artist to the scene, so this is the first time everyone is going to get to listen to me. This is the beginning and as I progress, it will be about the next page.”
After saying that her favourite English MC is Lady Leshurr, the lyricist also spoke of making an EP with the ‘L Yeah!’ rapper: “To be honest we’ve already started, we’ve got about 30 songs and we’re working on an EP to release… we just haven’t got a release date, but stay tuned its coming soon!”
Over the years, we have watched the U.K rap scene fill up with talented ladies such as Mz Bratt, Amplify Dot, No Lay, Lady Leshurr, RoxXxan and others. Cakey spoke about being a female in what was once a completely male dominated field, saying: “I don’t think it is ever gonna become easy to be honest… like, if one of my videos gets uploaded on YouTube, it’s always guys that comment saying things like ‘these girls are sl*gs’ - do you know what I mean?
“It is always gonna be a bit controversial, boys’ think they are better than girls… like they think girls should be in the kitchen or whatever; but it never brings me down.”
Speaking on her future plans, Paigey Cakey said we can expect “more videos and more freestyles. I just wanna create a massive buzz and just get out there!”
