Hatcha’S Dubstep Chronicles
Hello everyone! It's yours truly, DJ Hatcha, here again to fill you in on another crazy four weeks in my busy world of dubstep. We've had some great DJs and MCs pass by my Kiss FM show over the last month, including Flowdan, Kutz, Laxx, Scratch Perverts, Goth-Trad and Stinkahbell. The guests never stop coming! Next week, B Live and Tunnidge will be down and then we have Surge the week after, followed by FuntCase on April 24, so make sure you lock in. If you miss any of the shows, don't forget to head over to the Kiss website and listen back.
On the events front, 'Licked Beatz' recently celebrated their second birthday and Goldie, MJ Cole, Goth-Trad, Bannerworx, Mark 1, Eddie 7 and Logan Sama were all there. It was a good look and a brilliant night! I'm always clocking up the air miles, but two weeks in March were particularly nuts for me. From a gig in Watford, I then flew to Saint Petersburg, Russia, to play Zal Ozhidaniya before going on to '16 Tons' in Moscow. Boy, do they love their drink in Russia! Both clubs were packed and absolutely banging, you can't ask for much more than that. I then flew to Montreal after my Kiss show the following week and then went down to the Winter Music Conference in Miami for 'Smog VS. Basshead', which regular readers of this column will know I was very excited about.
I've been doing the Winter Music Conference for about six years, and it just grows and grows all the time. The conference itself has always been massive but it keeps getting bigger and bigger for dubstep. After smashing up the 'Smog VS. Basshead' night, which didn't disappoint, I flew back to Heathrow, met Crazy D and jetted straight off to Istanbul in Turkey to play at The Babylon Club. It's a brick wall club, so I knew that it was going to be a great sound. It was kicking before we even turned up! The crowd absolutely loved it, so that was another successful night.
Loads of tunes have been getting a lot of love when I've been playing them, but here's my top ten for April. You may recognise a few in there from previous columns but there's been a couple of VIP mixes that have taken the tracks to a whole other level, so get searching for those versions:
1. Distance - 'Overload'
2. Lost - 'Mad Jester'
3. Jakes - 'Cadi VIP'
4. Subzee D - 'Hold Me VIP'
5. Fuzed Forced - 'Plastic Society'
6. Skream - 'Profuse VIP'
7. Kutz - 'Rock N Rolla'
8. Hizzle Guy Feat. Beezy - 'Jackpot'
9. N-Type & Surge Feat. Pyxis - 'September Sun'
10. Laxx - 'Hide & Seek'
Also keep your ears and eyes peeled for Cato Feat. Lucy Randell - 'Spotlight', it's been in my top ten a couple of times and we're now going to be releasing it on Sin City. We've just done the video for the track and it’ll be getting a full release in the next couple of weeks. I've also been back in the studio this week with Lost Hench, and we've just done a VIP version of 'Albarsha'. I’ve just finished a track called 'Metric Weight', which is sounding great. We'll usually get in the studio, turn Fruity Loops on, decide on a style we want to go with, come up with a drum pattern, get in the zone and work it from there. I've actually just finished 'King Toes', a track which is so fresh that I've only given it to five people. More on that track soon!
Right, that's me just about done for another month. This coming weekend, I'm playing at 'Passpop' in Holland for a night called 'Oi! Dubstep', before heading back to London on Sunday for Croydub at The Black Sheep Bar in Croydon – where I'll be going back-to-back with One Man for an old school garage set, alongside Mighty Moe. After that, I’m heading off to Cable for a new dubstep night with Crazy D. I’ll be filling you in on all the details about those nights in my May column.
Until then, take care of yourselves.
